Supernatural Sandwiches

My first day of my weeklong Thanksgiving Break was spent up in Mira Mesa...

where TC and I met up with Mary for lunch at Supernatural. Sandwiches.

They opened the brick and mortar shop in early 2014. Prior to that, they were found at various farmer's markets, including the now defunct San Diego Public Market in Barrio Logan.

See that doll action figure? More on him later.

TC and I shared the Cthulu (lobster roll//$16, ouch)) with a side of garlic shrimp fried rice  ($4) while Mary had a salad and the same rice side dish.

So many good choices.

And here it is...

There were lots of chopped up shrimp in there. Big meaty pieces not crappy miniscule bay shrimp.

Our lobster roll was served with a side of shrimp chips (what my mom would have called "kropek". When unfried, the chip resembles a plastic disc which magically puffs up in hot oil). The sandwich was on the smaller side with a nicely toasted bun which was completely drenched in butter. I loved it but TC not so much. There were lots of meaty lobster chunks within as well. Since we ordered a side with a sandwich, the girl who rang me up said it came with a free drink. With the sandwich clocking in at $16, it's not something I could buy on a daily basis (although I would LOVE to eat this every damn day).

The powder on the chips is "togarashi" which I've been seeing on more menus. It adds a spicy kick. You can buy your own togarashi power at any self-respecting Japanese store (Nijiya, Mitsuwa, Marukai, Kyoto) and sprinkle it on whatever you want.

Their nautical themed art wall. Mermaid boobs tastefully covered by their long hairz.

Is that the Hydra from Godzilla battling the Loch Ness monster? I always think of Triton, the father of Ariel in Disney's "Little Mermaid". Triton is also the mascot of UCSD. Not as fierce as the SDSU Aztec in my opinion. Ha, I'm biased.

I happened to notice their logo which is full of hipster cliches.

Which you can see, blow by blow at this site, the Hipster Logo Generator. Man, this shit is so funny and so true. I swear some companies must have used this.

If you click on this link, hipsterbusiness.name, you can also name your business fter designing your ultra hipster logo, ha ha. It's really does seem like the names are contrived and random. I wonder if they decide to use an "&" versus a "+" sign.

Farmer & Seahorse anyone? Salt & Cleaver?  Juniper & Ivy? Well that last one makes sense since they are actual street names in Little Italy.

Here's a recent article about this trend of ampersands in business names:
"Awash in Ampersands" Chicago Reader, Fall 2015

Remember the figurine by the wooden Supernatural sign at the counter? Well, that my friends is the DC comic book character, Aquaman. Here's a "short history" in video form:

As it is with Hollywood nowadays, many comic book related movies are culling from the DC and Marvel universes and making movies about character that no one ever gave a shit about before....like Aquaman!

Gone is the orange and green costume. And he's not white either!  Holy $%#@!  Remember Khal Drogo? No? He also played the newest version of Conan the Barbarian (2011 version).

This dude is Lisa Bonet's husband! She played Denise Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" (ugh, Bill Cosby). Her first husband was LENNY KRAVITZ!!!!! Yowzah.

Jason Momoa, eh...

Hmmm, I might just watch this movie, ha ha!

Mary, TC and I enjoyed the garlic shrimp fried rice. It wasn't overly salty like some places do fried rice. I normally never order it but TC wanted to try it and it seems great minds think alike since Mary also had it. She wasn't feeling it for a sandwich that day but has been there before (post linked at the end).  The gals who work here were quite friendly and super cheerful. We got there before the lunch rush and were able to snag a table. At one point, it was pretty full (there is seating inside as well as out).

$16 for any sandwich is a lot in my opinion. I wonder why the lobster roll has seemingly taken off this year? Have you ever tried to make a lobster roll at home. I wonder if one whole lobster (like a live one from, say, HMart) could make two nice lobster rolls.

The hipster business name generator is awesome. Thanks for the link.

Don't forget to try House of Bites next door. I recently returned and had their philly cheesesteak which tasted pretty darn good. Plus, their chocolate baklava was to die for.

Faye, I totally agree. That is a lot for just a sandwich I know it's lobster and all, but still.

Mary and I did go to House of Bites. That post is forthcoming and let's just say we had a bizarre experience there.

Man, the dude at House of Bites. Man oh man. I'm glad the sandwich part of our adventure was good that day :) I wish I hadn't been feeling ill otherwise I would have gotten my usual shrimp banh mi! I liked their shrimpy chips, too, though sometimes the spice on top is a little too spicy. The hipster logo generator is hilarious!

Yeah, he was a bit INTENSE. I still have to put up that post, ha ha.

I'll have to try that shrimp banh mi here next time.

Re: hipster logo generator - I swear some business must have used that!!!!! Anytime I see a circle with X'd arrows or rifles or whatever, I laugh inside.

Haha, I love the hipster logo generator! Glad you got to try this place out. The lobster one is def on the expensive side, but I think a bunch of other ones are around $10 if I remember correctly.

Yes, isn't it funny? I want to try their other sandwiches, especially the ones with shrimp and scallops.
