E.Vil Donuts

A few blocks away from Copa Vida was a relatively new donut shop...

it's right by the trolley line and Azteca taco shop.

Despite the mostly negative reviews on that four lettered site, I couldn't pass up the opportunity...

They offer donuts as well as donut ice cream sandwiches. I wasn't planning on having one of those. I think I'm done with ice cream and the thought of eating it as a donut sandwich filling kind of makes me ill. I'm not in my 20's anymore and eating shit like this will actually take a toll, ha ha.

As you walk in, to your left is their very cool digital mural, "Fat Villains" by hiphop artist, Freehandprofit. The pop culture/comic book characters are depicted over a realistic map of downtown San Diego (you could make out the Convention Center):

Pictured above and below is a mixture of movie and DC & Marvel characters-  Venom, the Joker, Mystique (blue skin), the Alien (from the movie "Alien"), the Predator (from the movie "Predator") plus Darth Vader (Star Wars, duh), Catwoman, Magneto, Godzilla, and Dr. Doom...

Bert is not sure what that round cross hatched character is.  Anyone recognize it? It's the "Predator" from the movie "Predator" (he thought it was funny the artist placed it next to the Alien; there is actually a movie called "Alien vs. Predator").

More artwork on another wall...

Their menu...

Wow, cronuts? Aren't those passe now?

They had an interesting selection...

Basic White Girl? It's actually a pumpkin spice flavor. I looked it up. Is this what they think white chicks like?

The Caramel Latte was promising...

I chose that over the chocolate covered one since it seemed too messy (although I would probably eat it if given the chance).

D wanted to get a trio of donuts for me, Bert and TC which was nice of her...

Two of the three...

The Caramel Latte for Bert and the Cereal Bar for TC. The donuts were sampled later at home.

I chose the Blueberry for myself. It appears that they used real blueberries which were studded on the outer perimeter of the donut. However, when it was bitten into...

No sign of any blueberries. The donut itself was dense, dry and heavy. There was no blueberry flavor at all inside the donut which tasted more like cinnamon to me. This FUCKING SUCKED.

Caramel Latte donut:

This was the only one out of the three was was worth eating.  It was light and airy inside. The glaze was delicious and it really did taste like what it was named after.

I didn't bother with the Cereal Bar pix. TC took one bite and pronounced it, "Not good at all".  I also took a bite and found it hard, dry, and dense.

Decal on some nearby hipster barber shop. I liked the name of the pomade and the Wild West font.

Would I go to E.Vil Donuts again? All signs point to most likely not. But maybe, just maybe...if I was desperate...

To salvage this post, here is VINTAGE METALLICA (1992) with their cover of Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?" (filmed while they were in concert in San Diego at the Sports Arena back when it was actually called the Sports Arena not Viejas or whatever it's called now)).

evildonutsd.tomblr.com plus the mixed bag of reviews from that four lettered site

Out of the three donuts, only ONE was edible. The other two were so horrible that only one or two bites was all it took to chuck it into the trash. Sorry D, I feel like her $$ was wasted...

Our time in East Village was done. It was now off to what I call the Outerlands of San Diego, way out on the 15...to the 'burbs of Carmel Mountain Ranch for our next caffeine fix!

womp. it seems like a lot of donut shops focus on creating these crazy gimmicky flavours but then their actual doughnut dough sucks. i've had a cereal flavoured doughnut before and it was ok but the cereal part actually sucked because they get super stale or soggy sitting on top of glaze for hours. more for show then for taste.

p.s. that is the hair stuff the bf uses! haha.

HI JS - Yeah, I would agree with you on that! Case in point, Streetcar Merchants. Every damn donuts has brioche dough. Theirs is heavy and dense. Not what I like in a doughnut at all. Plus their donuts are low on flavor throughout the donut itself and onlhy relegated to the toppings which is lame.

So true about cereal on top of donuts being stale. TC likes the look of them but ends up not liking how they taste.

Haha, so cool! "Suavecito" is also the name of a great song by the Latin rock band Malo.
