Little Jewel of New Orleans

Like the Pied Piper of Hamlin, the nattily dressed Carl Baldwin led us down the street to one of his favorite new eateries in Chinatown...

the newly opened (at the time) Little Jewel of New Orleans...

which he and his wife raved about. We couldn't pass up on their recommendation especially since po'boys were on the menu...

Bert is always on the lookout for authentic (at leas the way he remembers having them) po'boys. Most of the versions he's had in San Diego are pretty weak and skimp on their ingredients.

Health food this ain't:

But yeah, I'd eat almost anything on that menu.

Love the decor here at Little Jewel. It's not just a restaurant but also a market where you can get all kinds of regional Lousiana/New Orleans products.

Again, lots of great choices...

Now THIS was a colorful board.

The Chaurice po'boy was recommended but we ended up getting one Oyster and one Shrimp po'boy to share. We were warned by Caron about how hot it already was but we wanted to take our chances...

Although it was on the crowded side, we were still able to grab a table...I was amazed at all of the products in here. I wished I could have spent more time going up and down the aisles.

Our beverages:

Condiments...it seemed every table had a different kind of hot sauce on it.

Both of our po'boys came with thick cut fries.  Bert  has had real po'boys before from past business trips to New Orleans.  Both were spicier than we had anticipated...

Bert liked it because these were packed pretty full and not watered down with just a few pieces. The breading was thick and pre-seasoned for someone who likes it hot. Holy hell was this spicy. TC couldn't even eat it because she is not a fan of this type of spiciness.

That's not to say this was bad...No, the oyster and shrimp in the sandwiches were quite tasty and abundant.  I ended up eating more of the filling rather than the bread.

The service here was good and there were lots of happy people inside enjoying a taste of the south. Bert struck up a conversation with an African American gentleman who was a big jazz fan. He was from the south and found the food to be authentic and to his liking.

A few recent videos to give you a glimpse of Little Jewel:

We were happy that we stopped by but we were tired and ready to head back home.
