Snacks from Harvest International Market

Yesterday I thought I would get some Christmas shopping done at an ethnic grocery store I hadn't yet been...Harvest International Market in Clairemont.

This used to be North Park Produce...

and a comic shop (that no longer exists) used to be a few doors down. We used to go there in the mid '90s when we first got married.

I remembered Cathy's posts on Harvest. This place was like Disneyland inside and if I had more time, I would have spent more time exploring. I didn't take any photos inside except for this one:

Brain Masala...that's a new one.

Harvest Market has so many great Middle Eastern products. There are shelves devoted to fava beans, hummus, olives, all kinds of flat breads, pickled foods, exotic candies, nuts and more. It's like the North Park Produce we used to have in CV before they went out of business. There was an in house bakery selling breads and flatbreads for super cheap, like $1.50 and up for certain items.

Vegetable lahm bahjeen:

Plus Samosas...

Beef and Spinach.

I had a lot to do that morning, so I only bought these three items, the vegetable flatbread and the samosa duo which was enjoyed later that afternoon.  The flatbread was so delicious. We ate it with my homemade roasted eggplant dip. The samosas were fully packed and tasty but I wasn't a fan of the bready outer shell though.

A few products I bought, mango biscuits and wafers (for my friend MFH who loves mango anything) and fennel seed candy (Indian restaurants have these on hand as an after dinner sweet).

I got the coconut wafers for my sis.  These were only $1.50.

I'll definitely have to come back here to try their other in-house savory foods.

It was nice being here early in the morning (if you call 9 am early). It wasn't crowded. The market is nice and clean and full of interesting food items that are so inexpensive and not found in mainstream markets.

Who else went to Harvest International Market?

Since it was Small Business Saturday, I wanted to go make a run through of SD's core neighborhoods to seek some deals for gifts for the holiday season.

Fennel seed candy sounds so weird to me.

It isn't so bad but not something I would eat on a daily basis.

We used to get fennel seed candy when I was a kid...I was told alternately that it was to prevent an upset stomach and that it was a breath freshener. I'm so glad you got to see this store- it's great, especially the prepared foods.

Was that a Polish thing too? I believe the Indians use the fennel seed candy for the same purpose.

Definitely will come back here to try other things and to explore the store.
