MJ's revisits

I'm trying to "backfill" my posts. The magic of blogging that makes it seem like I blog everyday but I don't.

This particular visit to MJ's was when I met Mary and Jake...

last NOVEMBER! What? Ha ha...yes, this was languishing in the queu then forgotten...

I met up with them prior to their Portland, OR trip to loan Mary some books/recs on good ole PDX.
(Check out her account of our MJ's visit here). We actually wanted to go to Homestyle Hawaiian but they weren't open (it was a Sunday) but MJ's is just a few steps away from HH anyways.

Believe it or not, this was lumpia. Lumpia with a bunch of crap piled on top. I shouldn't say crap since it tasted good but I believe they were going for a lumpia/rolled taco fusion thing. I just don't think you should mess with lumpia. Serve it plain with sauce on the side. That is all.

I would have enjoyed this more without all the toppings. Leave Lumpia Alone!

We were curious about their dessert called Crispy Cakes, which were more like fried donut hole things but with a cakey texture. These were the chocolate chip "cakes" which had the added sweetness from the powdered sugar. Overkill? Probably, but they were pretty good!

More recently, I was here with Mr. TJ  and La Ley. Mr. TJ is notoriously picky when it comes to ethnic food but he was willing to give MJ's another shot.

This was my croissant breakfast sandwich with an added hashbrown and an egg fried over hard. I hate runny yolks. I would totally get this again. Full of SYSCO goodness or badness. That fried hashbrown was so good. The sausage patty was probably Jimmy Dean. I didn't care. Loved it.

This was Mr. TJ's rice entree with chicken sisig. I was so SURPRISED that he even got this. Well, it was kind of 'safe', being chicken and all, but yeah, he took the plunge and got something other than teriyaki chicken whatever. The rice was Guamanian style red rice and the accompanying slaw had gingery soy dressing. He liked it.

La Ley's Longanisa plate with red rice and the same type of Asian-slaw.

She really enjoyed this as well. I could eat this everyday if there weren't dietary repercussions, heh heh.

Previous visit to MJ's:
July 2013

I know they have other preparations like tacos, bowls and such but I am stuck in my ways since I gravitate towards the Filipino style breakfasts - rice, meat, and eggs. Well, in this case, a croissan-wich deal.

The service is always nice and friendly there and I like that it's close to home. MJ's is best known for their Longanisa fries so if you are ever down in my 'hood, you need to try that!

Haha, I totally forgot about that weird lumpia and those crispy "cakes" that were really donuts. That Longanisa plate looks especially delicious!

I remember we both did not like the lumpia presentation. The dessert was good though. You guys need to go back for their famous longanisa fries. :)
