The Hog's Apothecary was just one block away from Homeroom...
It wasn't so busy and Bert and I were only going to share one sandwich.

As you can see from their menu, it's a bit on the pricy side. TC overhead a whole family walk in and then walk out, with the father exclaiming, "I'm sorry, $17 for a sandwich is a little out of our range" to the server.
Not knowing Oakland that well, in doing my research about this stretch of 40th, the area has been on the upswing over the past few years. Revitalization they call it. Gentrification as well. With that comes hipster restaurants like these. Well, San Diego has their share of those in North Park, South Park, Normal Heights, etc.

We chose to share the Fidel, their take on the Cuban sandwich.

Bert also got the Whippersnapper beer, an English style brown mild ale by Berryessa Brewing Co. from Winters, CA. It had a nice malty flavor and went well with the sandwich.

The Fidel came with housemade potato chips (very good these were!), housemade pickles (of course), and ham, pork loin, and mustard. Yes, it was a pricy sandwich but it sure hit the spot after sitting in the car for more than eight hours.

We all thought this was an interesting pot planter...in the bathroom no less.

The view from our window. We saw someone gardening in the traffic median then he took a break. This was probably the coolest median we saw with its abundance of plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers.

The neighborhood's upcoming street fair...

Time was a wastin'! We had places to go and wanted to crash out at Thane's place soon.

Haha... I have paid that much for sandwiches and burgers, but then again, I am a little crazy. Always better to share! The meat looks good (I'd throw those pickles away, of course) and the bread looks nice and crunchy. It even looks like it's buttered a little on the inside.
I have too, but it's not something I could do on a daily basis.
I tried a pickle but Bert and TC ended up eating them. I'm not a big fan of pickles in general but I do like relish in my hotdogs. I'm not sure if that was butter or aioli in the sandwich. It was a good sandwich but would I pay $15 again for it? Probably not.
The name of this place cracks me up. A twee bit pretentious. It's like those restaurants with "&" in the title, like (and I'm making these up), "Twigs & Berries", "The Wolf & the (insert other noun here), "The (fruit) & the (vegetable)". Blah blah blah.
