I'm not sure what species those primates are (not gibbons, maybe howler monkey?) but this was at the train stop.

We lucked out by finding parking on Kettner not even a block away from our dessert destination...
the very popular Juniper & Ivy helmed by celebrity chef Richard Blaise.

It was around 6:30 and it was already packed inside. We were "chancing it" but since we were only here for dessert, were told we could have it at the lounge chairs behind this screen (the other side is the entrance and reception desk). There were lots of yuppies there...A LOT. Our server was a really nice young lady who made us feel at ease.

View from my chair...

and view to the right, the busy bar.

I wanted to try something much better than those horrible shrub drinks. My choice? See the very last wine listed at the bottom, the dessert wine (muscat).

If you turn the menu upside down, you will find their dessert list in the corner.

The table was three tiered but the top moved! So cool!

We were feeling adventurous so we shared two desserts. First up, the Yodel. Warm chocolate sauce is poured over a tube of milk chocolate. In looking at my other blogger friends' posts, the chocolate wasn't poured over the length of the tube but only in the middle which made it break in half. Our dessert server poured it all over! More on the innards in a second...

Bert saw butterscotch on the menu and had to have the PB&J dessert.

The blondie brownie at the bottom had the PB&J flavor in it. Sandwiched in the middle were banana slices topped by a thin praline crisp which was topped by plantain ice cream. The sauce at the bottom was bourbon butterscotch. It was very rich and very sweet.

Back to my Yodel...As you can see, the warm chocolate melted the tube which are plugged at the ends with devil's food cake circles. What I loved about this dessert was that every bite seemed to be different. I loved the many textures of the Yodel so much.

One side had devil's food cake with white chocolate ball crunchies.

The other side had chocolate crumbles, hazelnut brittle, cracked honeycomb pieces and dessicated strawberries.

I literally could not finish it as much as I wanted to. Bert and I enjoyed our desserts and if I could go back to choose another dessert, would get the same thing!
We'll have to come back for dinner one of these days. Definitely before the end of the year.

The night was still young, but hey, we're old (ha ha)...

We noticed that the painted tile art on the on-ramp to southbound 5 from the Grape Street exit was gone! In it's place, the wooden supports and bolts that used to anchor it in place. One can only wonder why it was taken down! Bummer.
Who else went to Juniper & Ivy?
Kirbie went not just once, but twice and even thrice!

I almost forgot to mention that the music they were playing was 80's! It was the more "popular" stuff plus the Smiths and Morrissey:
"Enjoy the Silence" - Depeche Mode
"Just Like Heaven" - The Cure
"Bizarre Love Triangle" - New Order
"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" - The Smiths
"Everyday is Like Sunday" - Morrissey (from his first solo album!)
Points to whoever did the play list. At least they weren't playing techno or that sensitive songwriter shit. I would totally love Juniper & Ivy even more if they played METAL! Yeahhh...it would scare away the yuppies.
So...after having had the shrub spiked rum plus the dessert wine, I was ready to crash...and it wasn't even dark yet!

I love the yodel there! We get it every time we go there. And by every time I mean the three times I've ever been there. If you ever have a full meal there I love to get the baked biscuit thing with butter :)
Hi JS, you went twice more than we did! I will have to try that biscuit that everyone is raving about. Thanks for the rec! I'm glad they kept the Yodel on their menu. It seems like they rotate their desserts but the Yod remains constant.
So glad you got to try the yodel! that one is my fav dessert there. I just love all the textures. Though recently we had the desserts at Bracero and I was really impressed too. that might be my new fav restaurant desserts place.
I'm glad we tried it too. I remembered your post and the yodel has been highlighted with every mention of Juniper & Ivy. Can't wait to give Bracero a try (eventually).
White chocolate ball crunchies is best description ever. I never had the yodel but heard amazing things about it. How come they don't just let the patron pour the sauce over the yodel? Did you get a chance to see Richard Blais working that night :)
Haha, yes. The Yodel is as good as it sounds and looks. I wish they would let the customer pour the sauce too. We sat in the lounge only since it was all booked and crowded. No Richard Blaise sighting.
The yodel. Oh man. I love that thing. I love the different textures, too! I would totally get that every time, haha.
I wouldn't mind having this again, heh heh.
