Valentine's Breakfast at The Huddle

Bert and I are SO OVER going out to dinner for an overhyped holiday...

Instead, we went out for breakfast in this here neighborhood...

to a well known diner that's been there forever...

The Huddle is in between University Ave and Stockton Dr, on Goldfinch. I like that there are bird named streets in Mission Hills, a few of which are Hawk, Eagle, and Falcon.  I guess they didn't want to use Vulture, Stork, and Seagull?  But seriously, very cool street names here.

I love the old school Lunch sign and the interesting architectural details...

It is pretty small in the front, but I believe there is another room in the back because people kept coming and going from the back room. I guess there is another seating area back there. As you can see, this is an old school diner, complete with counter and fixed stools. It reminds me of the Irving Street Cafe in the Inner Sunset in SF.

Awww, isn't their mascot so cute? It's like the tanned version of the Pillsbury Doughboy, which is fine by my book! TC was doing her volunteer gig in case you were wondering, otherwise, the teen would've been with us. While she was out with the horses, we were enjoying the hubbub here.

Bert and I shared our corned beef hash with hash browns  and eggs combo (with sourdough toast) along with orange pecan pancakes (Thanks to Mary's post). We also had a side or hosuemade strawberry rhubarb jame for our pancakes. I didn't use it I didn't want the flavor to compete, plus I just wanted to slather my pancakes with butter.

This is not gourmet food folks and you shouldn't expect it. The hash browns had a great crust to it. The corned beef hash was probably Dinty Moore from a can. It definitely wasn't homemade. That being said, we still liked it!!! As for the pancakes, two is considered a "short stack". The texture was nice and springy with a tiny bit of sponginess. There were chopped pecans throughout as well as actual pieces of orange rind. They were delicious!

It was crowded when we got there and even more crowded when we left, like-line-out-the-door-people-waiting-like-hawks crowded!

Service was a bit slow. It took about 40 minutes for our food to arrive but the time seemed to go by quickly with Bert, my Valentine.  Awww,

Who else went to the Huddle?
Here is a post from 2009 by Dennis:
"Lazy Sunday breakfast at the Huddle", while Mary's post from July 2012 is finally what prompted us to pay The Huddle a visit. I noticed they don't give out Huddle Bucks anymore. Sad lemur face.

They don't have a website but here are various reviews from:
Yelp and tripadvisor

Breakfast part 1 was done. Now it was time for coffee and dessert, also in Mission Hills, just a few minutes away...

I was just telling some co-workers about the Huddle last week (when they forced me to Denny's and I told them of much better breakfast places in town) and it reminded me I haven't been here in a long time! We don't go out for breakfast too much these days, probably because there's too much going on in the mornings on the weekends right now. It's simple food, but man, do I like it. Yes, there's a room in the far back, beyond the kitchen. It seems to me like it's a "large parties" room and has a bigger table back there from what I've seen. The bathroom is back there, so you can spy it when going to use the restroom.

I figured there was a 'mysterious' backroom. A lot of people would come and go and I thought, WTH is back there. It can't just be the bathroom, ha ha.
