What's a Filipino birthday party without pancit (as seen above) and freshly sliced (and deseeded) calamansi...
Our calamansi tree rewarded us this year with many fruits and I was quite glad to bring some to accompany my mom's pancit bihon, which is the best.
My nephew is completing his junior year of high school. College is right around the corner! I still remember when my sister brought him home from the hospital, the first grandchild on my side of the family. He was the first of what would be four nephews, the string of boys broken up by the birth of TC (whose status as the "only girl" was supplanted by my brother's daughter a year and a half ago)...
These were just a few of the dishes we enjoyed that day to celebrate his birthday...

Lumpiang shanghai (from JNC Pinoy Foodmart), fried shrimp (from a local Chinese place), green beans with kabocha squash , pork, and shrimp (made by my mom)...
Hot links...

These were actually quite spicy but so good!
Salt & Pepper Fish from Mandarin...

This was a new dish my sister hadn't ordered before, Picadillo (spiced ground beef with potatoes, red bell peppers, raisins, peas, carrots, and topped with quail eggs).

I've not seen the dish with quail eggs on top before and these were picked off the hungry partygoers in no time. Not pictured were other contributions like Caesar salad and a deconstructed sushi dish (rice, layered with eggs, chopped Krab, avocado and furikake), and a few others I can't recall.
Dessert was simple. Just a cake and homemade kutsinta (pronouced "koo-chin-ta"), made by my mom with freshly grated coconut (courtesy of my dad).

This is nephew #3's favorite Filipino dessert...

My mother used to sell these little rice flour cakes for extra pocket money to her Mexican and Portuguese co-workers at the now defunct tuna cannery downtown (Bumblebee Tuna).
TC's plate - the basics...as you can see, nothing green on here. :(

My plate where I had a little bit of everything.

My favorite was the kabocha squash and the picadillo. The fried shrimp was quite popular as well as the lumpia.

Nephew turns 13 May 2010
Nephew #3's birthday is next month along with future middle school promotion ceremonies (TC and nephew #4)...
Summer vacation can't come soon enough!

Man, kids need to stop growing up so fast! When Jake and I started dating his youngest son was four and now he's eleven. The time just goes by too fast but at least you have all of these delicious treats (and your family) to pass the time with!
ha ha - I know Mary, I know! i missed when TC was still a toddler! she was, and still is, pretty easy to please. she will try almost anything.
You also have Jake and his kids (and your parents) for your culinary adventures as well! :)
My sister misses that her boys are no longer babies either.
The pancit looks so comforting right now. Have you tried the new Grill City in Mira Mesa (it opened up in Seafood City). Their bbq looks really good.
I have yet to try Mandarins salt and pepper chicken wings. Is this the Mandarin in Convoy?
Hi Faye - awwwww.
RE: Grill City - we have one down here in CV in the Seafood City supermarket and yes I've tried it. Good fried fish!!!
the Mandarin i'm referring to is down in CV, across from Southwestern College.
