The 210 was a horrendously jam packed freeway in some part...

Unfortunately, I should have checked ahead because...
the Donut Man was FUCKING CLOSED!

Closed!

Easter was the next day and that was the reason why. Normally the Donut Man is open 24 hours (except on certain holidays). They WERE open earlier that day but closed at 12 noon. Well, I guess the owner and his family plus his employees deserve some time off!
But dagnabbit, that mean no strawberry donuts or Tiger Tails...this time!
Instead, since (repeating a familiar mantra), "it was on the way" home...the trusty Garmin indicated an 85C Bakery just a short distance away in Chino Hills.

This location closed later that evening and is much much bigger than the Irvine location.

As you walk in, the bakery racks are on the right, with cakes and other treats on your left. In the middle is the cash register.

It was nice having this bakery with more "breathing room", not like Irvine where it used to be mega crowded nearly all the time.

All of us filled our trays, in anticipation of Easter the next day. This was KD's tray.

This was mine - two brioche (covered by mocha buns), a wrapped packaged of toast, one squid ink galric bun, a couple of hot dog breads, a cream cheese dotted bread (forgot the ame of it), a striped mocha/walnut bread, and some sort of chocolate pastry.

D's artfully stacked tray...she had one of the maple brick toasts and a lot of the hot dog breads.

The gal wrapping my pastries told me she wanted to go to SDSU for college (my alma mater)...

A peek into their kitchen...

Cakes on the other side and also where you ordered drinks. In fact, we didn't realize that if we spent $15 or more, we could order a free drink! Well now!

The "free drink" special ran until the end of April. These were a couple of our drinks (the other two looked the same but were other variations of tea). I ordered a fruity smoothie to give to TC when I got home.

Here is the sign we walked past earlier. Had we read it, the novelty of the free drink wouldn't have been that much of a surprise.

By the time we left, the bakery started to get filled up with people coming in and buying cakes and pastries for Easter. We were glad we got there when we did...

Bummer Donut Man was closed! That happened to be the first time we tried to go to Peterson's in Escondido. I thought, "man, just my damn luck that the 24 hours place is closed for two weeks for the holidays" hahah. That striped bread looks interesting!
hi mary, yes that was disappointing, but i should've checked ahead. you have to try the striped bread next time if you go to the 85C in Irvine or when it finally opens up in SD.
