Before heading home, I asked Bert if we could check out this store off of University Ave and 32nd...

I see it all the time right before I head south on the freeway so it was about time to finally check it out...
It's next to an antique store which looks like it's going out of business...

On one of the tables was a Chinese "jade tree" that pretty much EVERY Filipino house has. Well, not mine, bu my parents. Bert's mom has one too and so do all of my aunties.

I have to say that their "Mother's Day" display was quite hilarious and clever!!!

I love the owner's sense of humor! There's Mrs. Bates, a "Psycho" movie poster and a creepy small toddler that I didn't notice until I posted this photo!
Here's a screen shot from the movie when Mrs. Bates' mummified remains are found and she turns around in the rocking chair!
Even though it totally looks fake copared today's hyper realistic special effect, in the early '60's, this was quite horrifying. Thanks Alfred Hitchcock for this lovely image.
I was looking for a gift for a friend, a co-worker who was actually subbing for one of our regular staff who was on maternity leave.

This display was pretty cool and also disturbing with those old porcelain dolls. I always think that they will kill you in your sleep!

You could say this a "hipster" religious store. There were lots of cool decor in here with the saint, good ole JC, my favorite, the Virgin of Guadalupe, along with Mexican Day of the Dead stuff.

I thought these earrings of the VOG on copper were cool...

but I didn't want to spring $20 for a pair!
Interesting decor here...

The chair was lined with glue gunned bottle caps. The dude in the painting? I have no idea who he is.
This nun with the blacked out and drippy eyes looked very eery. TC told me it's from the horror TV series, "American Horror Story", a show I haven't watched as well as a show I wasn't aware that she knew about!

The skeleton animals were cute though!
Here is a makeup tutorial I found on youtube featuring that particular look rocked by the mannequin:
Alrighty then!
I bought a couple of these knotted mini rosary bracelets ($1.50) each.

The red one would be the gift. The black one, for me.
The guy working here was pretty cool. The store had a lot of really neat items like t-shirts with designs taken from the "Loteria" Mexican card game. Bert's favorite was "El borracho" (the drunkard). There was a cool shirt I saw with a skeleton playing a guitar. It was a mix of religious imagery with the macabre. The prices of many of the items were steeper than what I would pay for, which is why we ended up going to another store in the area...
That store was Back from Tomboctou in Normal Heights. It's a more eclectic store were I knew I would find something unique for my friend,

I actually bought the same stuff for MFH for her birthday last year: a small handpainted angel from El Salvador ($3), a card with the VOG ($2), and a handwoven bracelet from Mexico ($3). Not bad!

Previous visit to Return from Tomboctou:
March 2013, the same day TC and I walked over the Georgia Street Bridge and visited the Adams Avenue Bookstore cats...

Now that we were done with our little jaunt to these stores, it was time to head down south to meet up with TC at the picnic...
