is Fatboy Corner Store & Deli, which carries a big selection of fancy sodas. I just now noticed the new vertical deer painting.
Looks like they covered the old "Beer & Cocktails" sign...

Bert and I were planning to meet up with the Horns...
Darlene and Paul Horn that is (of MyBurning Kitchen/ZagatSD-fame and CoolJerk...
The plan was to have some pizza here...

which we did: Bert's Meatda, my Pepperoni with Mushroom, Paul's Cheese, and Darlene's Vegeta...

The special is currently $6.50 for two slices plus a soda.
Then, we would walk a few blocks north to a relatively new brewery with the most awesome name EVER...

The Belching Beaver!

Darlene had suggested this place and we were quite happy to oblige. I'd been wondering about this ever since seeing the signage go up...

The board advertised beer floats which seem to be the rage nowadays. No one was doing them in San Diego in 2009. Bert and I first tried one during our first Portland trip at Pix Patisserie with KD's brother. Floats are a great way (for me at least) to enjoy both ice cream and dark beers like porters and stouts.
Both of us couples decided to get flights...

while Bert was deciding which beers, I snapped some interior shots. Paintings by local artists were on display and for sale.

It's pretty big in here and the outer seating area benefited from the breeze since the windows were of the rollup variety.

Andrea's Truffles were for sale...

The wrapped packages had two each and were the better buy. I bought one of each for us to share.

Pointer finger modeling by Paul Horn.

Every piece was pretty good and went quite well with the darker beers.
The Horns' flight (you could choose 4 or 6 tasters): Beaver Milk, PB Stout, Liquid Waffle and the Saison de Beaver:

I'd asked Bert to get the 6-glass taster not knowing how big the pours would be. My eyes bugged out when I saw just the 4. I didn't think Bert and I would be able to finish 6, but somehow we did. You can see our selections below on the card, with Bert's neat writing. Trust me, you would have a "fun" time trying to decipher my chicken scratch.

My favorite was the PB Stout because it was quite easy to drink. The lighter colored beers were way too hoppy for me so Bert pretty much had those.

I liked the presentation of the beers but 6 was a lot! Luckily, we had some of these truffles to go with the beers!

While enjoying our beer tasters, Bert noticed a former high school friend of ours passing by. She was with her daughter and had come by to get a growler fill.

The view from the corner of 30th and El Cajon, where Bert and I made a quick stop to a nearby coffee joint...

A few days later, I finally finished the rest of our truffles which were hiding in the fridge. They were quite rich and had a lot of different flavors and textures going on, which I liked. I especially enjoyed the Coconut Almond Milk Match and the Malted Toffee Stank while Bert enjoyed the Dam! Hunk o'Burnin' Beaver truffle!

We will definitely be back to the Belching Beaver, hopefully with our other beer loving friends like Tatonka, Thane and Superman! Since TC wasn't with us, they didn't bring The Doctor, but hopefully both will make an appearance at our next meetup...
