Del Mar Rendezvous

This past weekend was a rare TC-less lunch date with Bert...

Since my birthday celebration has been practically stretched out over every weekend, I figured, why not not advantage of this offer...

We are hardly ever in this area so we wanted to check it out...

Parking is free in the structure. It's for these business in the Del Mar Plaza. Park on the first floor because the second floor is reserved for the Harvest Ranch Market grocery store.

I like the decor in here. Very modern with dark woods.

We sat by a window near the wine wall. Tables were granite. Very nice.

We ordered two items. One from the lunch menu and another on the other page. I didn't want to include that photo but I was surprised that their menus were dirty. Like food stain on the plastic! Gross! We got the Crab Mango Salad (which is cut off on the very bottom of the menu)...

As Bert would say, "It's never too early for a Yan Jing!" I, on the other hand, got iced tea. The other Asian beer choices were Tsing Tao and Chang (a Thai beer) which he's already tried before.

Our entrees:

I'm glad we just stuck with the two entrees. If we had gotten appetizers, we would have been stuffed before the end of lunch. Loved this salad which had real crab meat, not that fake Krab crap. Oh, and the mangoes were fragrant and ripe. I wouldn't have gone so heavy on the mayo though.

Our Honey Walnut Shrimp - We were asked if we wanted white or brown rice. It was nice to have a choice, so we picked brown. It came with mixed greens like the crab salad. The broccoli was too "raw" (or not steamed enough) for my liking but hey, I wasn't there for the broccoli!

These skrimps were huuuuge! There were maybe 8-10 of those in there. OMG, just looking at this photo makes my mouth water. A big thanks to Kirbie for recommending this dish as well!

Right before I was going to sneak off to snap a shot of their cool bathroom sink, our server came back with this! A mango half with a lit candle! Thank goodness, no silly songs or announcing to the whole restaurant!

This was just a regular candle, not a Roman Sparkler like at The Pearl!  When we got this mango, I was thinking in my head, "How the hell are we going to eat this mango half with SPOONS?"

Turns out that the mango was scooped out and filled with mango sorbet! When I put in my spoon, the mango flesh seemed 'unusually soft' but then I realized it was sorbet! Wow! Even better! I thought we'd be digging at that fruit with our blunt spoons like convicts pounding on rocks. This was a nice and unexpected touch!

And as promised, the very cool sink that they have in their bathroom!

Looks like a wok, doesn't it?

The pretty lasercut wooden lanterns strung up outside DRM. I'm glad we made the drive up here. Other than the dirty menu, the service and food were both excellent. Next time, I want to try their Honey Glazed Spare Ribs and their King Pao Pork!

Who else ate at Del Mar Rendezvous?

Kirbie had XLB, Kung Pao Pork, and that Walnut Shrimp
while Mary had XLB, Shanghai Style Noodles (the kind that are fried with vegetables on top), and Honey Glazed Spare Ribs. Both of these lovely ladies were also hosting contests during Restaurant Week to win a dinner at DMR.

In fact, it was one of Mary's posts that spurred me to sign up. Even though my 20% offer expired earlier this year, I was still able to utilize my free birthday meal, so yay and woo hoo!

I'm glad you liked the shrimp! I was really impressed with the shrimp size when I was here too. I didnt get to do the birthday thing because they were actually closed for renovations for a month or so, including during my birthday month. Oh well.

So we didn't make it over there for our dinner that night. The Mister was just too tired and I was okay with that. I do want to try the shrimp though.
