The search for jamoncillo...plus Kababayan and Oasis!

Update - Kababayan Market closed as of 1/2014 and relocated to Spring Valley

Our next stop was Northgate Market on Coronado Avenue. This is beneath the shadow of The Wing, a South Bay Landmark....

There was some sort of event happening with food being grilled outside and a booth where you could kick  soccer ball to get a prize...

Well, let's see if they had what I wanted...

which was Jamoncillo, a candy made of  milk and sugar. Now this box that you see here was given to me by my hairstylist who is also a very dear friend. We usually talk about food and exchange dishes and restaurant recommendations. I'd never had this before so she insisted I take it home...

The texture is soft when you bite into it. It tastes just like a Filipino pastilya candy, but those are made of buffalo milk. It's like a milk fudge. This is a fancy type since the pieces look "extruded" or piped from a pastry bag. The candy was super sweet and delicious....

She didn't remember where she got the candy but said it could be found at the Mexican markets, so I thought it would be easily found at Northgate. As CAB and I were soon to find out, jamoncillo was nowhere to be found. Instead, we saw a lot of pan dulces...

No jamoncillo in the candy aisle, bummers.

I even asked one of the employees and he looked but he said the closes thing they had were these individually wrapped pieces of dulce de leche candy which wasn't quite the same.

It was time for a change in plans. I thought it would be fun to take CAB to the little strip mall that has three Filipino stores and Oasis Ice Cream Parlor. Our first stop was Kababayan Market (I really hate the word "Oriental"! Pulls hair in frustration)...I wanted to show her the fried snacks.

But first, noodles! Noodles for different tyes of pancit: palabok, bihon, and the one wrapped in pink? Those are the noodles I use to make chicken long rice.

Mmm, MSG!

In the back, the smell of fried things filled the air.

And by things, I mean, fried pork belly (lechon kawali - twice fried), mini fish (dilis), chicken skin, intestines (chicharon bulaklak), and pig's foot (pata). The word 'pulutan' refers to fingers food that you eat most often when drinking alcohol. Yeah, fried greasy chicken skin 'n San Miguel beer. The perfect combination.

One day, I will buy some of this!!! Dip it into vinegar with crushed garlic.....

There is a limited selection of fresh produce (bananas, potatoes, carrots, bittermelon, tomatoes, etc).

I bought a a couple of packages of turrones de casuy, this is one of my favorite Filipino candies. The wrapper looks like thin styrofoam, but it is made of wheat flour. It tastes like a wafer. The inside is a nougat made of cashew nuts.

The other two Filipino establishments are a sari sari store at the end of the strip mall and on the other end, Donna's Filipino and Hawaiian Food. Despite the moniker, they are NO LONGER selling Hawaiian food. They should change their sign then, eh.

Even though we went to only two places to eat, we were stuffed but still had room for a bit of dessert. The perfect place to go then was Oasis ice cream of course. The friendly owner wasn't there that day and neither was the young lady who is normally there. Instead, it was a young guy.

It's been awhile since I'd been here. They didn't have any blueberry ice cream, only in paletas. Bert would love the new pistachio flavor while TC would like the half vanilla and half orange (creamsicle) flavor.

Double scoops will only set you back $2.20.

CAB chose two sorbets: Mango and Pineapple, both excellent choices.

I had the double chocolate chip with the walnut. I like my ice cream to have things in it, you know, texture. Loved the double chocolate chips and wouldn't hesitate to have it again!

Where to next?  I still wanted to see if I could find that jamoncillo...

Mmmm, fried food! I looked for jamoncillo recipes and the one on Allrecipe is very very similar to the dulce de leche recipe I make. It's just taken to soft ball stage and then beaten.

Looks like the evaporated or condensed milk version is similar to the one I made for you but with vanilla extract. Seems like whipping it with a beater while it's cooling help gives that fudgy texture.

i want the same kind of jamoncillo that i was given. the one i bought at el ranchero was too fudgy. i liked the piped shapes.
