Pozoleria Dona Maria

Immediately after our first taste at Asi es Jalisco, we drove down Broadway to another nondescript strip mall for this...

Pozole....

None of us had ever been here before. I remember seeing it a few months ago when Bert, TC and I were having lunch at Miramar Fish Market across the street.

Pozoleria Dona Maria makes their pozole "en estilo Guerrero" (in the style of Guerrero, one of the states in Mexico). Pozole, a pork and hominy stew, is a special occasion food in Mexico especially in Guerrero.

I've only had pozole two or three times and it was homemade. I didn't really have anything to compare it to, so we all came here with an open mind. My biggest peeve was the long wait to get seated (at least 10-15 minutes) despite the empty tables. The receptionist was also waiting on tables and there was only one busboy. Perhaps they were short of staff, but it was a bi ridiculous.

I liked the font on the Bufalo hot sauce bottle...

Tostadas were brought out prior to our soup coming out. It came with two types of hot sauces, sliced limes and chopped onions.

We ordered the pozole with just the pork meat (no organ meats or bones). The traditional accompaniments to pozole included shredded cabbage, and sliced radishes.

As a side order, I wanted to be adventurous and ordered Tostadas de Pata, which were jellied cubes of chopped pork foot. It's hard to see it underneat the shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and avocados.

I don't know what I was thinking, but I thought it would be fun to be adventurous to try it. Well, the texture and the flavor wasn't what I expected. I didn't think it would be "cold" and "gelatinous". I ate about 2 cubes and that was it for me. The others in the party were also game but both Kirbie and I weren't big fans of this. TC, on the other hand, enjoyed my leftovers, which shocked me.

Here's a look at that soup - big pieces of hominy and delicious shredded pork. The pork broth was all right but made more flavorful with the accompaniments.

My individual bowl:

At this point, Kirbie and FH had to leave early along with Dennis, so they went their separate ways while CAB and I continued the crawl...

Up next, the search for a particular Mexican candy....

This was my first time trying pozole and I liked it! Thanks for introducing us to it. The pig feet cubes not so much. hehe. But it's always fun to try. =)

hi kirbie - there are other kinds of pozole to try that i think might be better - RED pozole and GREEN pozole. the red is more flavorful.

That was some good pozole. I enjoyed the first few bites of the pig feet cubes but more than one would be a bit much even for me. Would love to try the other ponzoles too.

i've only had the white and red pozole, never the green. red tastes better.
