Bert's Birthday Crawl - The French Oven, Scripps Ranch

Today is Bert's birthday (we are 148 days apart; I've always taken his word for that too, ha ha),

and as has been our custom over the past few years...what better way to start a birthday weekend than to head out early for a crawl...

We are hardly ever up in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood. I'm glad it was not a weekday because driving on the 15 makes me nervous, especially with the craptastic traffic. Not today. Roads were clear and it was smooth sailing.  It was also still pretty early that no one was at the strip mall either, so I really liked that.

The French Oven is nestled in this tiny shopping center which offers all kinds of services as well as a few other eateries to service this neighborhood.

The owner/chef was there greeting everyone with "Hola" (which I found amusing since he is French).  Let me tell you that I wanted EVERYTHING in that case.

But this is what we ended up with.  We sat at an outside table. No plates, just the bags the pastries came with. Next time, I'll remember to bring paper plates.

For our savoriies, we shared a ficelle (thin baguette with brie, prosciutto and arugula), a savory ham and cheese pastry.  The other two pastries we just took a bite from and saved for later, the brioche bun with pearl sugar and a croissant that combined three great flavors, chocolate, almond and raspberry (CAR for short).

The ham and cheese pastry was delicious but in retrospect, we should have asked to have it warmed up.

The ficelle was also a nice light way to start off our day...

I should have bought another one of these. I usually see almond croissants or sometimes a combo of almond and chocolate, but never combined with raspberry. This was so damn good, but also quite rich. We managed to save it for the next morning.

Fluffy!

Before we left, I bought a few more things for us to enjoy for later such as this fresh baguette...

and this slice of quice as well as an "egg bite" (which had chopped ham within)

Instead of a birthday cake, I got Bert a slice of their pear tart (this was amazing by the way)...

We liked everything we had here and definitely plan to return and make our way through the menu. No lie.

Who else went to the French Oven?
It was Cathy's recent post which prompted us to make the trip north and man, was it worth it!

Those eggy items look so good! I don't think I've eaten pear in dessert for a long time but now I want one!

I liked the quiche better than the egg bite. The pear dessert was very nice. I think you would enjoy it Lynn. :)
