They opened about two months ago but we hadn't been able to visit until recently...
We previously saw this new store front a few months ago after visiting Su Pan bakery which is just a few steps away.

(photos from March 2018)
I had Bert park the car so I could take photos of the barred windows.
Googlemaps shows that Black Stag Cafe used to be an establishment called "Hibohana Henna Shop". You can also see two dudes staring at the google vcar, knowing they would be on camera.
The owners are a super cool young couple, Gus and Irma. He is also a brewer at Duckfoot. His wife grew up in Barrio Logan. We were happy to see that their coffee shop was also a gallery and featured work from local artists.

I liked this sentiment...

Their menu. Beans are from Coava.

The back area with reclaimed wood.

Art pieces by two different artists. All were for sale. Many of the pieces were made by a an apprentice tatto artists who works next door. I really liked his Morissey and Poe pieces.

Drinks from our first visit. We specified real cups. This was a mocha and a traditional macchiato which is not on their menu but I asked for it.

Both drinks were well made.

The mocha was pretty smooth; the milk was subbed with almond for Bert. His was pretty easy to drink. My macchiato was perfect.
On a more recent visit we met up with a childhood friend of ours...

Cortado #2 that day, using the same (but cleaned) cup that I used at Marleez...

I was going to be caffeined out that day!
Below, the return of the mugs, both holding lattes.

Vanilla latte for our friend in the NY Times mug + the Honey latte for Bert. The interesting thing about his latte was that the honey was made from avocado flowers, giving it a unique taste, almost like faint molasses.

Bringing your own cups/mugs will also score 10% your total, so be earth friendly and for the love of (insert diety here), don't drink from crappy papers cups!

Our friend also liked the drinks and the vibe here. As mentioned earlier, the owners are really welcoming people. It's nice to see folks following their dream and also serving the community. With vacation coming up, I'm looking forward to doing more coffee crawls with friends.
