The new Nomad Donuts Bakery & Cafe

In early January, the former Lady of the Lake New Age book store and gift shp was already gone...

The windows were papered over but...

this poster hinted at what was to come...

You can still see the letters of the former tenant. TC and I had been in Lady of the Lake before looking for particular semiprecious stones and crystals.  It had been there forever. Bert bought me a pair of ankh earrings years ago from this store.

Here is a photo of the storefront when it was STILL Lady of the Lake, taken from INSIDE Hammond's Gourmet Ice Cream.

Last weekend we tried going to the new Nomad Donuts after TC's birthday breakfast.

The line wasn't out the door but it sure was long inside.

One of the workers was busy making the Montreal style bagels, placing the honey boiled rings on the wooden slats (not sure if this is the right terminology) before sliding them into the massive wood fired oven.

Donuts were displayed in the glass cases (not shown until later this post), but only one of each. At quick glance it looked like they were low on supplies but I figured they only put out one of each flavor and there were more waiting on trays in the back.

On a more recent visit, as in today (heh heh), I returned to Nomad but this time with my good friend D (1/4 of the Educator GF's). I asked her to pick up me up at 7:15 am.  Luckily she was ready and willing and didn't mind the early hour.  The great thing about being early is finding parking easily and also avoiding lines and crowds.

Looks like they painted over the old "ghost" letters.  I'm pretty sure a real sign is coming soon.

No lines!!!

We didn't want donuts this morning, opting for savory sandwiches utilizing their newest offering, Montreal style bagels (one of the Nomad co-owners, Brad, was recently at St. Viateur Bagels in Montreal for "research").  When we were in Montreal in 2012, we didn't have a chance to go to St. Viateur or Fairmount but instead went to Kettleman's Bagels in Ottawa. My Canadian friend, C bought dozens of them to enjoy and freeze for later.

They sell four types of bagels (plain, sesame, poppyseed and everything) as well as a vegan version. Cream cheese spreads are also sold here and specialty bagels. We started off our morning with the egg and cheese plus the version with prosciutto.

This board lists their flavors of the day (many of them rotate).

One of each on display makes for a cleaner although more sparse look.

The bagels were on the pricey side, $2 each (compare that to .85 each in Ottawa).  We both ordered one of each flavor to enjoy for later.

Breakfast #1 (heh heh):

D's prosciutto bagel (plain; her choice so the other flavors wouldn't compete with the filling) with garlic herb cream cheese, tomato, pickled red onion, arugula and balsamic vinaigrette.

Nice combination of flavors. I couldn't really taste the balsamic (which was a good thing).  We ended up cutting each in half and sampling half of the halves!

My sandwich was the egg and cheese with added sausage (only $1.50 extra, what a great value; bacon or prosciutto were other options).  My choice of cheese was pepperjack (cheddar was another options along with another I can't recall).  My bagel was sesame, again so as not to compete with the filling.   I have to tell you that this housemade sausage was one of the better breakfast sandwiches I've had this year. You can tell the patty was handmade and not preformed or frozen. It was also well seasoned including a tiny bit of red pepper flakes and fennel seeds.  I really wanted to eat more of this but we had to save our appetites for our next stop of the day (post is forthcoming).

By chance, one of our colleagues (who also works at my school) saw us. He was picking up some donuts for his wife and children. He graciously allowed me to snap a photo of his half dozen; one row was vegan.  He lives in the neighborhood and like us, wanted to check out the new Nomad.

The bagels for our sandwiches had a nice texture to them. They had a tiny bit of a chew but held up very well with the fillings.  They were not "fluffy" but more dense. Being wood-fired, the bagels had a crisp exterior with a faint smoky taste.

Hot off the press! Check out Kirbie's recent post here! She was able to go last weekend (after our first failed attempt).

As mentioned earlier, this was just Breakfast Part 1 (don't judge!). We saved some room for our next stop at a new place in Clairemont...

Yes, the egg/cheese sandwich was really good and wow, that sausage! I need to try the salmon that you had! I like that their new location offers so much more.
