but we didn't have the chance to visit until this day...
It was a good two-fer since both the coffee place and bakery were neighbors. Plus, how could I resist this sign? You might recall the old nursery rhyme, "Hot cross buns"? I've never seen one much less eaten one, so I knew we had to buy one today.

Plus, Easter was coming and hot cross buns are traditionally only sold during towards the end of Lent. This bakery was a cool hybrid of Chinese baked goods plus Irish!

Everything in their display case looked good. These hot cross buns were fresh, with melted icing over the top.

We ended up getting one hot cross bun, one Irish soda bread, one Irish sausage roll and a pizza flatbread.

I could have eaten more of these, but we were sampling here and this for now.

TC really enjoyed the pizza flat bread...
As for the hot cross bun, it had a faint spice flavor and was filled with raisins. The cross represents Jesus's crucifixion and the spices signify what was used to embalm him in the tomb.

I actually never knew that until I looked it up just now. Below, bottom of the bun:

We ate what we could...we still had a few other spots to hit up this morning before taking the streetcar into the city.
Soooooo...fast forward to later that evening. For dinner, we bought a Chinese hot dog bun plus a corned beef pastie (this was really filling) which had a nice crust. We ate these two items with some edamame beans plus salad bought the night before at Trader Joe's (not shown here). We also had a few bites of the Irish soda bread, also filled with raisins. The bread itself was dry on the outside but moist inside due to the fruit within. It probably would have tasted better warmed up and with butter. I was just excited to try Irish soda bread for the first time.

The lady working here was really nice. Their dining area had "regulars" reading the Chinese papers plus folks who came in to pick up orders. It is a great neighborhood bakery.
