Dessert fail at House of Bites

After our lunch at Supernatural Sandwiches"...

Mary suggested that we try House of Bites just a few doors down.

It used to be a pizza parlor and is owned by a Lebanese family. As you can see by the menu, they still offer pizza along with Middle Eastern foods and desserts.

We were strictly here for desserts. Mary chose their chocolate baklava. I decided to take a risk and chose the orange dessert at the bottom of the case.

I asked the guy (the nice brother not the stern one) what it was and as much as he tried pronouncing it for me, I had to ask him to write it down. This is what it was...WTF?   I looked it up only and saw that it was also spelled "kanafeh". It is made with three cheeses (feta - ugh, mozzarella and some other cheese the guy said was Middle Eastern), cream and topped with noodles that are colored orange. It is meant to be served hot. I found out the hard way. When the guy asked if I wanted it warmed up I said, no but he said, "Just a little bit" since it's supposed to be served that way so I said, "OK", knowing I probably wouldn't like it.

My kanafeh (or Kquifh?):

Mary's dessert tasted so much better....

So the guy heats it up and sets it down. While I went to the restroom briefly, TC and Mary tried a bit of it and didn't like it. They told me that the man was watching them closely and could see that they didn't really like it. To be honest, I wasn't thrilled with a warm dessert that had feta cheese. It was very....spongy, soft and cheesy.  I hate soft goopy desserts and even more so when they are warm. Yet I knew what I was getting into when I ordered it. I still wanted to try something new.  Lesson learned.

We basically got a lecture in how the dessert is meant to be eaten warm and when you lift your fork, you are supposed to see the stringy cheese and blah blah.  And also how the recipe was his mother's and yeah....Guilt trip time. Mary was honest in her opinion and said she liked her dessert better. I ended up asking the guy lots of questions about the dessert (what was in it, how it's made and the country of origin) and how my husband would probably like it more since he enjoys warm desserts and I don't.

While we were picking at our desserts, he came over with a free piece of rolled baklava which we ate without a problem.

Thanks dude but next time we'll pass on the kanafeh.

Who else went to House of Bites

Would I go here again and endure being stared at and being made to feel guilty about not really liking their dessert?

That would be a big FAT FUCKING NO!  The dude was kind of nice to a point but was a bit overbearing and even defensive just because we weren't chowing down on the orange thing.  I actually forgot it was in the fridge so Bert never got a chance to taste it. When I remembered three or four days later, I was afraid it had gone bad so I tossed it.

Well, at least I tried that dessert ONCE but I'd rather get baklava from King of Nablus Sweets or Pistachios in El Cajon. Thank you.

Hahahahah... I'm sorry. I know it wasn't my fault or anything but yeah... he was being a little overbearing. I understand he was being defensive and "trying to make it right" but he did step over the line a little. I know I haven't even done my post about them because I honestly don't know what to say anymore. I'll probably just let it lie for now. Chocolate baklava is excellent though!

No need to apogoize for his a-holish behavior. I didn't like the staring and standing behind us which was a form of intimidation. WTF, are we supposed to like it because we feel coerced? I think not.

Oh no. That's super uncomfortable when owners/staff stare at you, waiting for a reaction to the food. I've had that before and it just makes me cringe thinking about it. Hopefully he didn't mean any harm by it. I read 'Kquifh' on the paper too. I've never heard of that dessert (spelled whatever way). I've also never had feta or mozz (?) sweetened in a dessert before. The chocolate baklava was good here but i just remember it being super pricey.

Hi Faye, I know, right? Well, to be honest,I don't think he meant any harm. Maybe it was a cultural thing. Feta should not be in a dessert of any kind, haha. I'd have to try that chocolate baklava again (I know Mary likes it).
