The Goonies Jail, I mean, Oregon Film Museum

After our time spent at the Astoria Column, we made our way to the former Clatsop County Jail, now known as the Oregon Film Museum...

But first, we passed by this, the Flavel House, which is seen in one of the opening scenes of "The Goonies". It's the museum where Mikey and Bran's father (Mr. Walsh) works...

I took my obligatory shot of the home but our attention was more focused on this:

Let's go inside, shall we?

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for kids aged 6 - 17. The museum is just the bottom floor so it's not as big as it seems.

Here's a quick look at the gift shop...I like how the David is covered up, heh heh.

Chunk doing the "Truffle Shuffle". If you think about it, this scene is kind of mean because Corey Feldman's character won't let him in the house unless he raises his shirt and protrudes his belly and makes wierd noises.

The gift shop also sold replica maps, gold foil wrapped chocolate "doubloons", and other memorabilia from the movie.

As you walk into the museum, there is a hall way with jail cells on the left and on the perimeter more info and displays from movies made in Oregon. Inside one of the rooms are cardboard cut outs of the characters in "The Goonies". Here's Jonathan Ke Quan who played Richard "Data" Wang. I liked his character a lot! He was Asian but his heritage was not exoticized. He was smart and had a lot of cool gadgets; he was treated like any other kid. For trivia's sake, the actor playing Data was also the young boy who played Harrison Ford's sidekick, Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".

This was Corey Feldman who played the Eddie Haskellesque Clark "Mouth" Devereux. In several scenes, he speaks American accented Spanish to the maid (played by Lupe Ontiveros who later portrayed the fan club president and eventual murderer of Selena Gomez in the movie, "Selena"). Corey was also one half of the Corey's (with Corey Haim) and former sycophant of Michael Jackson. Now that he's in his late 30's, he ended up playing Katie Perry's father in her "Last Friday Night" video.

Here's Jeff Cohen who played Larry "Chunk" Cohen (hey, he didn't even have to change his last name). He was the groups motor mouthed story teller, the kind who tells tall tales and no one believes him.

Oh man, this character was Brandon "Brand" Walsh, played by a VERY young Josh Brolin. He's one year older than me and Bert. I'd say he held up pretty well but he looked pretty grizzled in "True Grit".

This was one of the two female characters in the movie, Stefanie "Stef" Steinbrenner played by Martha Plimpton. I once had glasses like these back in the 80's.

and here is Kerri Green, who played the love interest for Brand but was also the cheerleader in "Luka" (staring Corey Haim and yes, a very young Charlie Sheen).

I thought this was the most stupidest and LAMEST character in the movie, "Sloth" played by former Oakland Raider John Matuszak. His deformed face was obviously a latex mask. Back then, they had to use prosthetic faces and it really looked fake. Anyways, his "acting" if you could call it that, consisted mainly of flailing his arms and making grunting and moaning noises.

Anyhow, the museum had several rooms devoted to the Goonies and other movies that were filmed in Oregon. This one had a bulletin board encouraging museumgoers to post their favorite Goonies scene.

"It's Our Time!"

The museum used to be the Clatsop County Jail. It reopened in 2010 as the Oregon Film Museum to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of "The Goonies". Several of the actual jail cells had Goonies memorabilia, along with costumes, and props from the movie.

This is from the opening scene of the film where one of the Fratelli brothers make his escape by playing dead in the cell.

There's the faucet pipe that he used to make it look like he hung himself...

Data's costume. Those clothes must have been huuuge on him. You can also see one of the kid's bikes in the back.

One of the jail cells...

Another exhibit listed the different movies made in Oregon along with a slide show of film clips...

This was the main hallway of the museum with jail cells on the left. There were hallways that ran the perimeter of the museum.

The Goonies exhibit...

Bert and TC sat in the picture car; the monitor had a green screen and you could change the backgrounds.

I noticed this one because it had "Twilight"...

I spy RPattz in the grey peacoat. This is the scene where he takes Bella into the forest and reveals himself as a sparkly vampire (heh heh). I think he uproots a tree trunk and throws it too.

The gift shop was selling a replica of the David that is scene in the movie. Except this one doesn't have a broken penis.

More fake movie sets...

This one was pretty cool:

Various quotes along the walls and ceilings in the foyer. My favorite one is "Chopper! Sic balls!" (from  "Stand by Me")!

"Number 5 is Alive" is from the cinematic masterpiece known as "Short Circuit" (I hope you realize I am joking)....

Quotes from "Animal House" and "Kindergarten Cop"...

A shirt featuring a quote from one of my favorite movies, "Stand by Me":

Before we left, we just had to get our mug shots taken:

My boots and hair made me 5'6"!

Bert actually posted his mug shot on his FB page and said he was jailed for a "parking ticket". People actually believed him and it almost got out of hand when people started writing, "Where are you?", "Oh my god!" and worrying about him.

One of our friends, the Sexy Nurse, knew Bert was messing around and warned him not to drop the soap and that he was "too pretty to be somebody's girlfriend". I can't believe the gullibility (is this even a word?) of some people! Like the cops would actually let him keep him smart phone in jail and post pictures of himself. Sigh. But it was fun while it lasted!

Unfortunately, Bert's blue Tick figurine was last scene on top of the hanging jail clapboard. He wanted to take photos of the Tick at the various places we visited. I guess he forgot to retrieve him.

On our way to the Goonies House (that'll be the next post), he was trying to find it and couldn't, so we went back to try to look for it. Alas, it was gone forever. Bert was bummed but the figurine was later replaced by a Sinestro figurine a few days later...

Unfortunately, the video can't be embedded but if you click on this youTube link, you can see an alternate version of the Goonies Jail Break Scenes with the Fratelli's and that mean looking lady from "Throw Momma From the Train!"

And here is a rockin' rendition of the opening music from "The Goonies"! Love it!

I wish this was actually me playing the guitar!

Up next, a visit to the Goondocks!

Whoa. The museum looks pretty extensive! And I'm pretty impressed by the cutout drawing of the Goonies character.

The bit about everyone concerned about Bert is HILARIOUS. LOL

HI darlene - it wasn't that big inside. but it was crammed chock full of stuff!

i forgot to take a photo of Mikey, the main character played by Sean Astin! D'oh!

Yeah, can you believe how lame some people are believing him? My husband is pretty deadpan so they probably thought he was telling the truth when he said he was in jail! ha ha!
