ABC Music Humpday Video 2.0 - "S" is for...

It's time to go back to the 70's...

1979 to be exact...

This post should be pretty easy...

The first clue...

(I've personally never tried this fragrance)

and the second...one of the original members used to wear huge hoop earrings like this:

I know I used to! I bought my earrings from the Broadway and the hoops were so big  that I could wear them as bracelets if I wanted to! I think a bunch of us chicks rocked giant hoops back in the late 80's thanks to this lady's influence on style...

Figure it out yet?

Here's the answer:

This is the 3rd studio album by R'nB/soul group Shalamar, consisting of the "classic" line up of Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel. It was produced by Leon Sylvers III (he of the leonine afro from the Sylvers; one of my fave songs from them was "Hotline").

Released in the summer of 1979, this song ranks as one of my favorites from grade school. N and I used to buy the magazine "Song Hits" and I remember this song, "Second Time Around" being one of the reasons we bought that particular issue:

"You can't keep runnin' away from love
'Cause the first one let you down
And though others try to satisfy you, baby
With me true love can still be found..."

Dig the "pewwwww, pewwwww, pewwwwww" sound and their coordinated but stiff dance moves! You can tell that Shalamar is totally lip syncing and the band members aren't playing their instruments either!

Just turn on the radio to 92.5 when they're playing their "old school" hits and you're bound to hear this song!

Bert was surprised I used "Shalamar" for "S". He thought I would do "Scorpions" or "Skid Row" or something. This kind of music is more up his alley, along with his older brothers who both graduated in the early 80's. They liked stuff like Earth, Wind and Fire, Lakeside, the Gap Band, the Bar Kays, Parliament, Bootsy Collins, and the Ohio Players. But this budding rocker still has a soft spot for these R'nB/disco hits from back in the day!

Previous post - "S" is for Styx!

Next week, T!

I have no idea idea who Shalamar is! But I remember the Broadway. Ah, I love the basement...
