Stop 3: Bonchon Chicken

Our third stop was at the newish Bonchon Chicken..

We were all excited to try Korean fried chicken...

Although I've had it before at Kyochon with Bert and TC in Glendale back in 2011 as well as D in Cerritos that same year, this was the first time a Korean chain had opened in San Diego.

The place was spacious but got crowded before we left. There were several large flat screens, most of them playing insipid K-Pop videos (yes, I am SO NOT a fan!).

We got a medium sized order of the half spicy and half regular wings, along with bulgogi fried rice and later, the seafood fried rice.

Small portion. D really wanted rice to go with the wings:

Yessssssss.

We chose coleslaw instead of pickled radish (not fans of that either but I hate K-Pop more).

Beautifully fried chicken lacquered with the soy garlic sauce.

The twice frying method renders the fat from the skin and keeps the exterior skin crisp and the meat within tender and juicy. Of the two flavors we tried, we liked the soy garlic better. The spicy wasn't overly hot but it packed some heat (and also did something later on if you know what I mean and I think you do). I'm glad we tried both flavors.

Seafood fried rice had chopped skrimps and some squid pieces. At least there wasn't any Krab.

Our bone receptable/container:

Sign at the place a few doors down. I love the pretty font, ha ha.

As we were leaving Kearny Mesa, I noticed the space that used to be Pangea is now getting fancied up with some sort of blue grid thing. The building also looks like it was painted. It will be good to have something new in that space, although the parking there sucked major ass. Most of the spaces were for the medical offices nearby and we usually had to resort to already limited street parking.

Our verdict for Bonchon? We loved it and will definitely go back to bring our significant others and/or kids.

Who else went to Bonchon?

There are a few Korean fried chicken joints in LA that I still need to research. A former student turned successful video game artist/designer has offered to take me on a tour in the near future, so I may have to take him up on his offer, ha ha!

The fried chicken skin is great here. I did get a little tired of the soy garlic flavor but I ate the whole portion alone (maybe food tastes better with company). I probably wouldn't enjoy the spicy. Btw the blue building makes me think of Ikea (haha).

Hi Lynn, I could eat the chicken skin alone and be happy. Food does seem to taste better with friend or company. Haha, the building at the end never used to have that blue screen (from what i remember). it does look like Ikea colors. It used to be Pangea Bakery, which I miss.
