Foodcrawl with Cathy - Stops 5, 6, 7 & 8 - Star Dust Donuts, DK-Che, Gloria's Bakery & Gonzalez Panaderia

Continuing the food crawl with Cathy...

we hit the jackpot when we saw Star Dust open!

But first, let's take a look at the new mural on the back of the building shall we?

Isn't this cool? I love how the sun is a donut!

The artist is only 14 years old and is a local IB resident.

Mr. Ed Arnold was one of the owners of Star Dust. He passed away in 2012 after 45 years in the business. His brother, Mr. Cliff Arnold still runs the shop.

Cathy's caramel apple fritter; Bert's German Chocolate Bar. As far as I know, this is the only place I can find this type of bar donut. It is my husband's favorite.

As we were pulling out, I noticed the new signage at Don Pancho's next door. Gone is the old sign with the blue and organe letters. This looked a little more modern with a thicker font.

This was just a quick stop. We were off next to DK-Che on Palm. I had a BOGO couon to use.

Pineapple chamango for me and the watermelon for TC. Both come with the appropriate blended fruit and chopped fruit, swirls of chamoy and are topped with chaca chaca candy, Tajin powder and enjoyed with a tamarind candy covered straw.

Mmmm, pineapple.

and because I didn't post these pix from March 2018, here they are...older chamango pix during an outing with TC. They have several menu boards. I've been meaning to try one of their raspados (an icier fruit treat). Their fruit cups look good too.

Ooh, happy hour!

plus mango:

We loved both!

For our last two stops, they were at bakeries. We wanted to compare roscas. This was Gloria's. We loved their window paintings. The store next door had "Feliz Navidad" on their window.

I bought two of these for later - breads filled with meats. One piccadillo and one machaca for Bert, TC and I to enjoy.

Oozing with cheese, yes.

The roscas here were more simple than the versions at Mexico Lindo. The price point was also lower but it is also because there is no filling. The owner was kind enough to give us a sample. Plain, but good! I like the sugar topping.

My rosca, only $8 - the fruit strips are guava and candied figs and cherries.

I believe Cathy also bought a meat filled bread for her husband.

The last stop of our day was at Gonzalez Panaderia...only a few minutes from Gloria's. Like the other bakery, they had window paintings of roscas on them. In fact, this whole weekend was dedicated to the Three Kings. This being the South Bay where there are a lot of Mexican and Mexican American residents, I am not surprised. It's nice to see traditions carry on in the U.S.

Their boxes...

OMG, look at these!  Their cakes were oblong and had an elaborate sugar crust topping with fruit strips.

They had different versions of their rosca - one without Philly cheese filling and one with. The one with the filling cost more (red sign, upper right hand corner). The charts also list how many "monitos" (little baby dolls) are in the various sizes. Tradition has it that whoever gets the piece with the tiny plastic baby must host a party and serve tamales on February 2 (Candlemas day). The bigger the rosca, the more plastic babies are inserted.

Delicious!

Each bakery we went to had their own version of rosca and we were fortunate enough to have sampled three different types today. Both Cathy and I have determined that we will get our roscas from Mexico Lindo for next year's Three Kings celebration.

Before the end of this post, this was the lone cookie I bought at the last Bakery. This cookie was for TC. It's a ring of flaky dough surrounding a different type of dough. I normally go here for their pepperoni bread but they weren't making any because they were too busy with making roscas (makes sense).

Previous visit to Star Dust Donuts:
August 2018 during my food crawl with Mary and Lynn

Previous visit to DK-Che
July 2015 - I know I'd been here more recently than 2015 but I can't find those posts. I thought I'd still include this because you can compare the prices. A small back then was $4.50. It is now $5.50. A medium sized drink was $5.50; it is now $6. The prices didn't go up too much at least.

Previous visit to Gloria's Bakery & Gonzalez Panaderia:
Decemnber 2016 during a crawl with Cathy (I'd been to both separately but this post combined both visits)

It was a pretty fun day, having gone to quite a few places.  Here is our day in order:
"Stop 1 @ Mexico Lindo Bakery + Stop 2 @ Al Pastor"
"Food Stops 3 & 4 - Tamales Ancira + the new Manolo Farmer's Market"
and this last post.

Looking forward to more food adventures with Cathy in 2019!
