one such recent morning involved a trip to Hillcrest...
which sadly has gone downhill in my opinion. There are a lot of empty storefronts and more homeless people than I ever remembered them having. It's not much in terms of restaurants nowadays either. The hot spots are now Little Italy and North Park.
Bread & Cie is one of the few reasons I would even go in to Hillcrest. This weekend morning date saw us both enjoying their excellent pastries - a plain croissant plus their pistachio almond stuffed croissant (very decadent).

Cross section:

Note to selves, if you sit outside on their patio facing 4th Ave, know that some of the tables are on a slope. Not fun!
This was Bert's breakfast - salmon benedict on their housemade brioche. You can see how the bread was formed in the photo after this...

This was my breakfas panini - eggs, bacon, and made fancy with arugula and tomato. The bread was lemon Pugliese which I've not had until that day and man, was it good!

Both were great choices. I ended up saving half of my sandwich so TC could enjoy it later (which she did). Loved the bread here and was looking forward to coming back again...
D fulfilled my wish when we had a girl's morning out. She wasn't quite back to work yet and I had another week to go so off we went. This was morning traffic...

Like last time, we parked in the lot behind Bread & Cie. Did you know it's free for one hour? That's pretty good since parking is such a damn hassle in Hillcrest.

D's housemade coffee. See the little cookie there? That was so good! I think I will buy another bag of them next time. They were like a little savory biscuit which had anise seeds within. D ate light - just a plain croissant with butter.

Croiss section:

D and I both sampled their persimmon hazelnut scone. We were both intrigued by the flavor combination. Our server told us to get it before it's gone because they don't do that flavor on a daily basis. I'm glad we made the decision to get it because this was one of the best baked goods I've had all year. I am not kidding you. I wanted to go back again to have just this.

My not so very breakfasty choice- roast beef sandwich. Not a panini like I had last year (which also included housemade pickles on the side, alas, none here). The watercress had a nice peppery bite to it which went well with their house made sauerkraut. Next time, I will get the panini version.

D bought a slice of their ginger shortbread for us to take home. This was the glamor shot on that cute Christmas printed plate I got at the Clairemont High rummage sale. This is another baked item that I wouldn't mind getting again. Very buttery and dense and that crust...wow.

A bag of assorted biscotti I bought for an upcoming dessert spread for KD's upcoming birthday crawl.

There are so many other menu items that we want to try (and hopefully shall).

I have a feeling I've eaten their bread at another restaurant but haven't really stepped into their building, except maybe a "Taste of" event? I would totally eat roast beef for breakfast though. Just gotta eat the yummy things when you can get them! =P
I'm pretty sure you have probably tried their products at either a coffee shop or a cafe. For breakfast, I prefer savory foods, not sweet, hence the lack of pancakes or French toast on here. Ha ha.
