Food Crawl with Mary and Lynn - Stop 1: Birrieria don Rafa

I hadn't seen these gals since our last food crawl,

which was back in August...

It was a dreary overcast morning earlier today when I met up with Mary of This Tasty Life and Lynn of Oh So Yummy. Once again, the food crawl was down south and it would be mostly Chula Vista this time. This kind of weather called for birria....

Our first stop was a place none of us had even been to, Birrieria don Rafa. This is their newer location on Broadway next to the Pancake House restaurant.  I liked the vibrant walls and the colorful artwork in here.

Loved this Frida as a chola...

Their menu can also be seen here (lots of great choices):

That red sauce was super hot by the way.

We shared one order of the birria de res (beef):

We also had it in quesadilla form - this was one of our favorite bites.

I was curious for us to try their chicharron en salsa verde, served with rice and beans.  I don't know what they put in that rice, but it was so good.  I normally don't like Spanish rice, but this was so flavorful and fluffy. The texture of the pork rinds is acquired, but I really enjoyed this, having bene exposed to it by my friend La Ley.

Service was on the spotty side. Let me clarify. No problems with our female server. The young man who served us seemed to forget things easily.  We were three but were only give one wrapped silverware pack.  When reminded, we were given additional silverware, but those were also missing different pieces as well. None of us had the complete fork, knife and spoons, which was wierd.  He also didn't serve us our corn tortillas with our birria right away. We waited a bit and by the time we got it, the birria wasn't as warm. Folks here were nice though and I do want to revisit with Bert and TC.

Who else has been to Birria don Rafa:
Kirk went here back in December 2013
and had also posted on their older location March 2009

More birria quesadillas please! I liked that this place was early (opens at 8:30 am). A revisit is in order...
