Fall/Specialty Drinks at Cafe Virtuoso, Moniker, Holsem & Black Stag

Fall is almost over with winter on the way,

with the new season are new drinks at some of the coffee joints that I frequent...

I haven't been to Moniker Coffee in a while, but when I saw that they had this Campfire Cappuccino, I wanted to try it. This was the same day I met up with Kirbie for brunch at nearby el Jardin (still waiting to post that after I do another visit).  As you can see by the first choice, I definitely wasn't going to have THAT. Plus, the apple pie drink was a tea, so pass on that as well.

The barista torching that bitch...ha ha. Actually he should have really bruleed it because that marshmallow didn't look all that roasted.

Still, this looked pretty.  The graham cracker bit was perched on the edge (luckily it did not fall over during transport).  The cappuccino sized was perfect, only 5 oz.  The drink itself was pretty damn good; used whole milk, not a substitute.  The marshmallow wasn't as melty as it should have. I would have preferred the graham cracker crust to have been incorporated somehow into the drink though.

At Cafe Virtuoso, their new drink menu was also calling my name. This was the same day as my Moniker visit. I was really craving another drink. This time, it was their Creature from the Black Lagoon, which was espresso with matcha, iced.

Refreshing but it did keep me wired the rest of the day, ha ha.

On a recent visit to Holsem, Bert tried their Peppermint Mocha. It was only mid-October so I was surprised to see the peppermint flavors out so soon.  Have to say that this was a pretty good rendition (he still loves Copa Vida's version).

That's my Zaki in the front. Looks kind of ugly since the mint leave was a bit submerged. The Zaki has some spices in it and cane sugar syrup.  I haven't had it in a while. Four years ago when Holsem opened, Bert and I tried pretty much every damn drink they had (see that post here)

Really lovely, but those chocolate shavings were melting fast!

Black Stag has become one of our favorite spots on a Saturday morning. The owners Gus and Irma are so very cool. We like how they make everyone feel at home here.

Their specialty drink menu. Bert wanted the Maui Waui but they didn't have the toasted coconut or the coconut milk, so that was a bummer.

This was my Good Morning Vietnam, served inexplicably with a sprig of rosemary (not a good companion flavor) instead of mint, as described on their menu.  The drink itself was good. I ended up taking out that rosemary. The smell was too strong.

Bert tried their De la Rosa latte - this was a latte with Mazapan (a powdery Mexican peanut candy; they are small discs wrapped in plastic with a "rose" design on it) and topped with sliced almonds. His drink looked so pretty and had a very nutty taste (both peanuts and almonds).

It wasn't overly sweet like the Mazapan drink at Por Vida. We still want to try that coffee drink with the coconut next time, if they have the ingredients.

With the holiday season coming...the peppermint mocha variations will start popping up and we'll be trying those drinks for days, ha ha.
