Old Townhouse Restaurant + the OB Pier & Sunset Cliffs

En route to IB via the 5...

the worst of morning traffic seemed to be behind us...

as we headed into OB.

Bert suggested Old Townhouse Restaurant to me the other night, having looked up "best chicken fried steak in San Diego" and seeing this eatery pop up. We hadn't been here before but had walked past it many times during previous outings to OB.

It's across from the Old Strand Theater (now a touristy t-shirt/souvenir shop place). You walk in and seat yourself. Revel in the old school atmosphere complete with blue fake leather booths and the dining counter. If you look closely at the far back wall, there is a tropical painting flanked by those giant wooden fork and spoons seen in some Filipino households (mine included). Points already for that fork and spoon decor!

You probably already know what I ordered. Their prices are quite reasonable and they served hearty portions here.

Bert got the townhouse special with sausage patties.  Below, their alcoholic beverages. I liked that they called the vodka with coffee liquer, "adult chocolate milk"

Our sizable breakfast entrees (Don't worry, we had a cooler for our planned leftovers; we had to pace ourselves today you know)...

Chicken fried steak (duh) for me with scrambled eggs, sourdough toast and hashbrowns. The chicken fried steak was nice, crisp and covered with a rich sausage flecked gravy. The CFS stayed crisp  even under the gravy! The hashbrowns were also crisp and not mushy inside. We really enjoyed how crisp the hash brown crust was.

Bert's special had a lot of food. It was like two breakfasts in one. His eggs were over easy. The sausage patties were juicy. His french toast had a hint of cinnamon. Simple, not fancy. We like it this way.

Crisp crust....yes.

This is probably one of the best versions of CFS I've had. It sure beats the version I had with the gross addition of a HAIR from that place from La Mesa that shall not be named.

Delicious gravy this was. This was even better than the version I had at Perry's Cafe last year.

I turned it over so I could admire the well executed fried crust.

Calories were walked off (probably not that many, but we did achieve more than 10,000 steps today) by talking a stroll on the OB pier.

As you can see, it was overcast. Surfers are out trying to catch waves on the northern end of the pier.

The tide was low; this was the farthest out I'd seen the tide since the tide pool area seemed much larger than usual.

On the northern side of the pier, we could see the seaweed covered rocks due to the low tide.

At the pier's southern tip.  We passed by a Chinese family who were excited because they caught a ray, which was flopping about wildly on the fishing line.

While walking back, we saw someone smoothing out the sand (not sure what you call this vehicle).

We took a quick peek at Sunset Cliffs, this is just down the street from the bistro, Little Lion (which Cathy has posted on).

We kept our distance from the edges. I really didn't want to stand on the cliffs period especially since they are eroding constantly.

The cliffs look spectacular and I know that some people jump off of them, but as for me, I'm content to view them from a distance.

Here's a pretty cool drone video of the area:

[Update] Who else went to Old Townhouse Restaurant?
Jinxi went not just once, but twice! She too enjoyed their chicken fried steak! Now I need to try their biscuits and gravy based on her recommendation!

I'm so glad that Bert picked OTH Restaurant. We  really liked it there. The service was so friendly and our server was always checking on us and making sure Bert's coffee was refilled. According to my friend La Ley, the lines are always out the door here on weekends. She'd been curious about this place too.

Our next stop would be over in nearby Point Loma to a newly opened food hall. We wanted to get there early before the crowds converged...

Aww I love Old Townhouse. It's probably my favorite breakfast place around here (and probably because of that CFS! I love how crispy it is even with all that gravy). I haven't been to Sunset Cliffs in a while... It's so magical there, any time of the day :)

Friend told me about the chicken fried steak here but I didn't believe his enthusiasm about it (he's only read about the CFS but never tried it here). So now we're totally going to have to try this restaurant ! How was the parking that day? I have't ever walked out to the OB Pier since it always seems closed. The pics you have of the pier and low tides are beautiful. We just visited the PB Pier so the OB Pier might be a fun place to visit this weekend after breakfast.

Hi Jinxi - I just updated the post to include your two visits. This may just be our new favorite place for CFS!

Hi Faye - yeah, I think you and your friend should go here and try the CFS for yourselves. It really is that good plus that gravy with the sausage bits. Mmmm!

We got there around 8:15'ish on a Wednesday so parking was easy, right in front in the 2 hour spaces. On a weekend, now that's another story. The pier has always been open when I've been to OB. Do you go super early or super late? Thanks re: pix of pier and low tides. If you ever have a chance, you should walk out to the tidepools. It's so cool seeing the mini anemones and the hermit crabs walking around.
