The first being just a quick run to Donut Panic to pick up a trio for Astroboi and his BF...
Sadly, the Vortex Coffee cart was not open that morning...
Linda was in the back busily making more donuts while her father was working the counter. They are both so very nice and treat their customers with such kindness.
Maple "bacon" (coconut), Earl Grey and Churro donuts for my dear friend...
This is where I went before meeting up with him for our morning adventure.
I'm assuming you already read about our breakfast at Brothers Family Restaurant? Yes, well then, this is where we left off...
Just a few steps down from Brothers is Heavenly Donuts. It was a "looksee" that ended up with me buying a few donuts for later (for TC and Bert).
This is probably one of the nices donut menu board I've ever seen.
They had a really nice selection of donuts and pastries and even the now outmoded cronut (which I did buy one, at $1.70!). I liked seeing the orange glazed donuts and the cruellers.
In fact, I bought one cruelle, one cronut and one blueberry filled donut; $3.90 for the trio.
Flaky glazed layers...fresh and light.
This was not too bad. It tasted more donutty than croissant like, but at $1.70, I'm not complaining.

You will notice that the parking lot for this strip mall only goes one way. After the quick donut vanity shoot, we made our way to the next stop on our morning foray into neighborhoods unventured.
This time in the city of La Mesa. It was still raining on an off...
In this particular strip mall with the Big Lots was the other donut shop. Cathy wrote about it not too recently (post linked at the end). There is a cafe there serving Greek, American and Mexican food (Patty's Cafe; be on the lookout for a future post by the ever knowledgeable Cathy of mmm-yoso).
Misspelled words really irk me...See below. Do they really have to spell "espresso" and "cappuccino" that way? It just sounds and looks so...wrong. But fear not. Despite the incorrect spelling, this tiny and unassuming donut shop offers more than just donuts.
They offer shave ice and malasadas (Portuguese fried donuts), but instead of the humongo sizes, they are bite sized and filled with flavors like guava, mango, and haupia (young coconut). Sadly, the lilikoi (passionfruit) was not offered the day of our visit.
See the board, about the Bobby "O" story? There is a donut named after a family friend. Please see Cathy's post (linked at the end) to see the actual story (you have to click on her photo); it's really cool and the donut itself is also excellent.
It's really small in here with no place to sit. You just order your donuts and scarf them down somewhere else, ha ha.
For home - another trio of donuts, malasadas (in the three flavors mentioned) and the Bobby O, a donut topped with chocolate and macadamia nuts and filled with haupia cream (.95 only; take that hipster donut shops).
The other trio of mini malasadas for Astroboi and I to enjoy at our next stop.

At home - the malasadas before they were consumed by Bert and TC.
I really liked the size of these. The traditional big ones from Hawaii are waaay to big for me to finish even one half. These are the perfect size to enjoy and even better with the tropical fruit filllings.
No cross section of the Bobby O. (you can refer to Cathy's post) but trust me that this donut could probably sell for more than .95 at those hipster donut joints, but here, it's only .95. Thank goodness for that. Let's keep it that way please, Papa's Donuts.
Believe it or not, we hadn't even taken a bite at this point!

Because this was a Prince weekend, here's something from the Batman soundtrack (the movie was shitty but OMG, Prince did the soundtrack!)...a song that is NOT "Batdance" but "Scandalous" (it comes in during the end credits at 1:51). Whoever made this video had the screen reversed (not sure why but at least the short version of the song is intact).
"Touch it...and explode"
There is a longer version of the song called "The Scandalous Sex Suite" and features the breathy moans of Kim Basinger (who also appeared in the movie and hooked up with Prince). I remember when Astroboi bought that version and we would laugh at the "romantic" parts; other than that, it's classic quiet storm Prince.
Caffeine in some shape or form was next on the agenda...
