a place that has been here "forever" it seems...

How can you say no to this penguin holding a burger?
or to this snowman holding an ice cream cone? Would that be almost like being a cannibal? Hmmmm...

In a few days these painted holiday designs will be gone...

Their menu was pretty straightforward. Bert and I shared the breakfast sandwich (egg, sausage and cheese), TC had the cheeseburger and we shared the interestingly named "potato cakes" (also recommended by Cathy). These were crisp oval shaped potato cakes with herbs and cheese. The total for all of this was a whopping $7.16. I don't think you can even buy one burger at a hipster joint for this price.

I wasn't feeling it for bacon that morning, so sausage it was. The egg was fried over hard the way I like it. I liked the lightly toasted bread as well. So much more satisfying than having something sweet in the morning.

These sure taste better than other hash browns I've had. The inside is not as "grated" looking, but mroe smooth and with a more unique flavor.

Yay, no runny yolk = no mess.

We got a text from Cathy to stay put. She and the mister (who live nearby) wanted to meet up with us to drop off Christmas gift. We waited outside at the tables near the drive thru window.

The tables and benches had gorgeous glazed blue tiles...

Aah, for next time...

But wait, there's one more recommendation that we tried at the last minute!
These were the fried zucchini sticks consisting of one very large zucchini cut into long strips and coated with a light batter and parmesan cheese. These were fried just right and were not greasy at all.

One stick was all I could manage since it was very very hot (temp wise) but I was sure glad we tried this. If you bought this at the San Diego fair, you'd be paying about three or four times as much.
Who else went to Beef 'n Bun?
Cathy first posted on this place in 2006 and more recently in April 2014
Dennis also went here back in August 2011 (check out the cool student made commercial at the end of his post)

It's easy to see why this place is a local favorite. If we lived closer, we'd be here a lot! If we're ever in this area again, we'll have to try their fried fish and their peanut butter shake....

Jake and I went here awhile ago and found out that a guy who used to work there left and started Fred's Burgers in Alpine (and the other locations, though El Cajon closed and the Chula Vista is kind of sucky now - haven't been to the Alpine one). They also have the chocolate pb shake that I love. I think Jake and I should try it again, just for those potato things... they look so good! Like a cross between a hash brown and a potato croquette.
Interesting to know! Yeah, the Fred's in CV sux. You're better off at Beef 'n Bun or In and Out. You must try their potato cakes! So good!
