Return to Mystic Mocha & Industrial Grind Coffee

[Update - Industrial Grind is now CLOSED as of 2017]

Bert and I have been enjoying our Saturday morning breakfasts these past few months during TC's marathon dance practice. It's like "dating" all over again, but with breakfast instead of dinner...

The big shows are coming up quite soon and we probably won't be doing this morning thing that much longer...

This particular morning, while TC was toiling away with the other dancers, we headed into University Heights to have breakfast at Mystic Mocha, a small coffee shop within the neighborhood. In fact, we had been here before, but just for coffee...

This was during the tail end of our massive heat wave. It wasn't in the high 90's like the previous week, but low 80's, which was still pretty $%#@ hot, if you ask me.

Luckily it was not busy the day of our visit. There were a lot of empty seats inside, which was good for us, but the downside was that there were flies inside which was not very pleasant. Hearing their loud buzzing makes me itchy and grossed out.  As you can see, the decor is eclectic and the layout has a bunch of wierd angles.

The view from our window...There is more seating off to the right of this view as well.

All right - for breakfast Bert got the torta with turkey sausage, egg and avocado with a side of mild salsa while I made a breakfast out of "sides": potatoes, a biscuit and what they call "bacon" but was actually really thin and shitty meat flavored crisps. Bert's sandwich was pretty good and I liked it much better than my carb laden plate (wth was I thinking!)...

I could be wrong but this bacon seems like the microwavable kind (which might have explained how cheap it was). It didn't have that "just out of the frying pan" taste. It was too flate and too thin and dry. This actually sucked. The biscuit was kind of dry so I just picked at it. The only thing decent were the potatoes.

Bert was kind enough to let me have several bites so I could have some sort of protein. Maybe I chose wrong or something. I just wasn't into the rest of their menu which featured wraps, scrambles, tortas and oatmeal (ugh to that last one).  Bert's coffee that morning was some sort of concoction with either caramel or hazel nut. I don't remember.

I still didn't have my coffee so we ventured not too far away on Park Blvd, to Industrial Grind. Bert hadn't been to this tiny coffee shack yet. I remembered they had a bathroom too (a nice one!)...

One of my usuals (at any coffee shop for that matter), iced mocha. Not blended this time. The gals working here are so nice. Last time I went, TC and I sat in the back patio; that morning there was a large group of people meeting there. The Industrial Grind logo was also newly painted on the back wall (not shown).

That little side table had a really unusual shape...

I enjoyed my coffee (smooth, chocolately, and sweet) and ended up bringing it with us to our next stop.

The day was still young and since we were in the area, we decided to visit one of San Diego's jewels, Balboa Park...
