Sandwiched between our visit to Hodad's and Beach Sweets was a short jaunt a few streets over to a coffee shop located in the Ocean Beach Business Center...

which shares space with FedEx...
One half of the business is FedEx, the other half, the coffee shop. I'd read online that Lazy Hummingbird is known for their coffee ice cubes and for their "Dirty Bird" coffee (a mix of chai tea and coffee). The display case held some pastries while the cold case had drinks and some dessert cakes. There was local art work on the walls; the coffee store serves as a mini art gallery and has several seating areas.

I had my 2nd coffee of the day, the iced coffee with the coffee cubes (which I didn't realize cost EXTRA, as in .50 extra). The pictures on yelp showed cups with big ice cubes. My cup only had a few puny cubes. I felt a bit ripped off. My coffee was super strong and I had to dump two sugars in it to make it drinkable. Because I had coffee cubes, my drink wasn't watered down and was still quite strong despite the sugar content...

There's a story behind this sign advertising their acai bowls...

TC was quite curious to try one after we'd been seeing it at practically every coffee/breakfast place this past summer and fall, so we got one for TC and her friend to share. It was blended acai berries which had a sorbet like feel, topped with hemp granola (which I read later was more expensive that regular and had a different shape), sliced strawberries, whole blueberries (hidden) and shredded toasted coconut. Plus our drinks. Mine was the dark one before I added all that crap to it.

Acai is supposed to be super healthy, blah blah blah. It seemed more like a dessert than a breakfast item. The girls treated it like a dessert. Bert and I had a few spoons of it and thought it was just okay. I liked the textures but I am not a big fan of eating fruit mixed with "stuff", just fruit by itself.

Notice there are no sliced bananas? Most places serve them with sliced bananas but not here. There's a reason for that which I didn't find out until researching on line about this place. The things I do for the blog. Information overload? Trivia for when you're bored? Adding a new wrinkle to your cortex? Yes, yes, and yes!

After reading that story below, I wonder why then, did they have sliced strawberries if they aren't allowed to "prepare" (i.e. cut up) fruit? Don't call the authorities!!!
Here is a recent article about the "return of the acai bowls" which were no longer being sold as recently as a few months ago due to an "overzealous health inspector" (hmmmm) and anal interpretation of the difference between being a "coffee cart" versus a "coffee shop":

Scratch the acai bowl off my list of "Trendy Food Items I Wasn't Sure I'd Ever Try"...
My coffee was pretty strong. Bert thought his Dirty Bird drink was all right. I was quite surprised that he chose it because he normally doesn't order anything tea-related. I believe he wanted to try one of their more popular items. The girls really liked the acai bowl while I wasn't that keen on it.
We had a long morning and would end up back at our place where the girls hung out, listened to music and yes, dyed their hair; TC blue and purple and her friend's tips, pink...

Acai bowls just seem like a weird trendy thing to me. I don't like ordering just yogurt and fruit, why would I pay that much for it when I can make it at home? It looks more like dessert, too.
I am so not sold on those acai bowls. Wtf, man.
