Who says romance is dead? Valentine's dinner at Roscoe's, Pasadena

It's Valentine's Night...Time to play some Barry White to get in the mood...

the mood to EAT FRIED CHICKEN that is!

As Barry would have said, "Aaaaaah yeah...."

Forget roses, hearts and all that it was time to get some chicken on...

at good ole Roscoe's House of Chicken 'n Waffles. The last time Bert and I went to a Roscoe's was nearly 20 years ago in Oakland with our good friend Thane (back when he was still a grad student).

Forget KFC in the back. We wanted Roscoe's!

We've kind of written off going to fancy places for Valentine's which use this manufactured holiday to jack up prices on their food. We wanted something simple and humble after our long day of mini food stops and quirky visits...

Thank goodness it wasn't crowded when we got there. I was hoping everyone else would be at the fancy places. When we left, the place was packed and there was a long line at the door.

TC saw that their mac and cheese was rated "best in L.A." so that is what she wanted.  We actually made a list of things we wanted to see, do, or eat during our road trip and having mac and cheese was on her list. Easy enough. Cross that off!

Even the President visited Roscoe's (not this location though) a few years ago.

Apparently Obama had the "Countryboy Special" (three wings and a waffle), which Roscoe's renamed after the Prez.

In addition to the condiments at the table, I snuck in some real maple syrup...

We pretty much ordered thighs all around.

One of the specials was two thighs with three sides(mac 'n cheese, corn bread and collards), another was one thigh with one waffle, and then we ordered two sides - a biscuit and a thigh. These dishes were shared between us...

To be honest, I didn't really like the waffle because it didn't stay crisp and it had a cinnamon flavor to it. The addition of butter and real maple syrup made it a bit more paltable.

As predicted, TC heartily enjoyed her mac 'n cheese (she let us have a few bites)...

The thighs were bigger and meatier than wings, hence the lack of wings on our plates. Plus, there's more delicious fried skin on the thighs!

My plate with a little bit of everything:

Fried chicken skin...for the win!

Health food, this ain't!

This was such a fun and simple meal. The vibe was casual and there were a lot of happy diners there that evening. Our server was a really nice guy too.

When I think of the name Roscoe, I am reminded of Roscoe P. Coltrane, the inept sheriff from "The Dukes of Hazzard". Gosh, I can't believe that show was even popular!

"My name is Ros-coe P. COL-train!!!!!"

Who else went to this location of Roscoe's?
Wandering Chopsticks and the Gastronomer...along with Cathy of Mmm-Yoso who went recently last fall during one of her Pasadena road trips.

Oh gosh, fried chicken would definitely be the type of meal S and I would have to celebrate special occasions!! Haha! I really need to check out this place... I've been having some serious fried chicken cravings/missing the South lately :) The mac n cheese sounds awesome too!

What an awesome Valentine's Day. I've been to the downtown, Pasadena and Long Beach restaurants and it seems like that Long Beach is the only one that serves a layered drink with lemonade and fruit punch. It seems like Southern waffles have smaller pockets for the syrup too.

hi jinxi - fried chicken IS a special occasion food in my opinion, haha. the mac and cheese was pretty good here as well. the only thing i dind't really like was the waffle.

hi darlene - it was quite memorable, ending our day at roscoe's. :) glad i brought real syrup too.

Great way to celebrate V-Day! I haven't been to Roscoe's in forever and Jake's never been! The waffles are not my ultimate favorite here because I would like them crispier, but they're good enough. I thought it was so funny you brought your own maple syrup! Man, I need to do that, too.

hi mary - yeah, it was cool going here. no pressure and no special menus. just good fried chicken!

the maple syrup they have is high fructose. i wanted my real maple syrup, the grade b kind!

It's just so good here. Same menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner(yes we saw people with greens and Mac and cheese at breakfast). It's their own waffle mix/batter and the waffle irons are the small ones that are seasoned, like at Waffle House. I grew up with this style and the non-crispy, non-thick waffles. I think they are supposed to be complimenting the chicken and not a sort of separate item. But there's always honey if you don't want syrup.

hi cathy - their fried chicken was perfect! juicy inside and crispy skin outside. i didn't think about the honey for the waffles, but that won't make a difference for me because i don't like the taste of their waffles.
