Just our luck, the train crossing signal went on and we waited and waited and waited...
But no train in sight. Not sure why we had to wait if nothing was there. Hmmm.
We were glad that we were out of SF during the storm but now we had to deal with rain and possible hail during the drive back home...
Before our drive down however, we made a few quicks stops. First at a local donut joint...

Yes, that IS an old fashioned in the flavor I'm obsessed with! Now why can't they make these here in San Diego?
We also got some coffee at another local place then headed down the 101...

Rather than getting straight over to the 5, we took the advice of a local who said to take the 46 from the 101 to cut over to the 5...
I smirked when I saw this tower...

La Ley once worked here in the small town of Gonzales years ago (but lived in Salinas) and HATED it. It was cloudy and rainy all the time and it was depressing. She was so glad to be out of this area and back in San Diego...
As seen from the 101 getting onto the 46...

TC suggested that we go here to this "random" store.

Turns out that this place is quite notorious as "James Dean's Last Stop" before he died in a tragic car crash en route to Salinas along this stretch of highway (formerly known as the 466 but now known as the 46).
And all we wanted were some snacks!
Ominous clouds were everywhere during the trip home. Sometimes the rain would be gentle. Other times, it would be pouring buckets...

No hail though, which was good.
As expected, we hit the early part of traffic in LA but it wasn't so bad once we got to the OC and used the HOV lanes.
In San Diego, we used the new HOV lanes as well but it didn't seem to make much of a difference because there wasn't heavy traffic in that stretch of road. Boo.

We're glad to be back home and had loads of fun during this trip.
Full blown posts to follow in the next few months or so. I'm sure I'll find a way to either stretch it out or to have a total explosion of posts...

Based on photos and a few write ups, looks like a great trip. I haven't been the the Bay area in years so it living it through your posts helps. Well, except the drive. Those are always tedious.
Hi Darlene - It was quite fun, yes! The drive, not so much. TC ended up sleeping most of the way.
