Mac quintet

Yesterday, my sis surprised me with these...

No she did not make them (an enterprising friend did) and was nice enough to give me this lovely assortment...

One of her friends was experimenting with flavors (Thai Tea being one of them, but sadly, not represented here)...

The macarons were so pretty to look at. The shells were rather delicate too. One of the mac's shells collapsed when I picked it up.

Cookies 'n Cream:

Coconut (aqua blue) and Fruity Pebbles.

I had to turn the Fruity Pebbles away because of the collapse.

Banana and Pistachio:

Of the five, I loved the banana the best. Bert liked the pistachio while TC enjoyed the Fruity Pebbles.

You can see the "hollowness" of the shells, which I don't think is how they should be.

Not having made these before (I'm too lazy to even try), I searched online for "hollow macaron shells wrong" and saw these informative articles (one with a recipe as well):

"Why do my macarons have hollow shells? A work in progress" from www.eatlivetravelwrite.com
The solution for her was to let macs rest a bit before baking and also didn't beat the egg whites as much to get rid of the "hollow shell" problem.

and this other rather detailed post:
"Troubleshooting macarons" from vivanmacaron.com (something about having to do with the temperature or the placement of the pan in the oven might contribute to hollow shells...it's in there somewhere.

Other than the hollow shells, I enjoyed these macs. The majority of the flavors were spot on. If my sis orders these again, I may need to put in an order of my own and try her friend's other flavors!
