to soak up some sunshine and also to enjoy the ocean breezes, right?
Plus, I had a coupon burning a hole in my wallet screaming, :"Use me before I expire!"...
Thank goodness for coupons, eh! I don't know about you, but I like to save some bucks now and then. Every little bit helps.

We made sure to get there way before the opening time of 11:00 am. To kill time, the girls and I windowshopped along Newport Ave. I found a really good deal on some Citizens of Humanity jeans (luckily in my size) at Thrift Trader for only $5!!! Those jeans are normally $150 new! Whaat?

At 10:59 am, we were second in line. In my past experiences, even if you got ten or fifteen minutes after opening time, the place is already packed. We've always been fortunate, but it helps to be prepared and to be timely.

Our view by our table...We sat near the car shell which only seats two. It was later occupied by a young mom and her toddler.

Both of the teens had bacon on their minds...

We started off with some Frings - it was more fries (actually potato wedges) than onion rings though. I wish they would offer less fries because their onion rings are so #$%@ good!

TC's Bacon Cheeseburger with everything.

My regular hamburger with everything except pickles and mustard.

KDD's Mini Bacon Hamburger with fries without onions. The guy gave us the wrong order because we were all supposed to have individual burgers, but I didn't make a big deal out of it because I had the coupon. Plus the guy didn't charge us for an extra soda so it evens out. The extra fries were brought home later for the girls to snack on later.

Everyone enjoyed their burgers. I had to take out a few onion rings and the tomato slice to eat mine properly. As always, the service (other than the semi-messed up order) was really good, the servers super nice, especially one guy at the end who was kind enough to check his phone for the tides for me in case we went to the tidepools (the tide was too high when we checked afterwards).
A few steps down from Hodad's was the local candy/sweet shop, Beach Sweets. The "OB" sign is made out of old Jelly Belly jelly beans according to the gal working there.

I didn't really take any photos inside since I felt self-conscious. The teens ended up buying a bag of their favorite flavors of Jelly Bellies.

Clear skies all the way and the surf was up too!

The walk to the end of the pier and back to the car counted as my daily exercise, haha.

The tidepools were submerged by the rolling surf...

And on the North side of the pier, dozens of surfers vying for waves...

The south wing of the pier.

It was a nice leisurely walk at first, but it hastened towards the end because it was getting super hot and we wanted to get some dessert!

It was a relief that tourist season was over. The beach was not crowded at all and neither was the pier.

Although Lighthouse Ice Cream features waffle ice cream sandwiches, I was itching to travel a few minutes north to a newer place in PB. The girls were excited to go there as well. Yeah, you know which place I'm talking about...
That post, coming up next!

I so like the time of year after Labor Day but before things get too cold and some businesses close up. Have passed Hodad's so many times (it was along one of my 'routes' for one election) but never have stopped. Now that the 'tourists' are less likely to be around, will be heading down to the beach a bit more often and probably will find parking.
hi cathy - it's a nice time of year. still nice and warm but devoid of the tourists! i like how laid back OB is.
Another good time to go is about an hour before they close (Dennis gave me that tip!). Now that tourist season is over, I feel like we can go back to OB/PB again. I've been wanting Hodad's again lately!
hi mary, yeah i read that as well. very true but it's easier for me to go in the morning since i don't like being out too late at night. i'm a fuddy duddy, hahah.
