Voodoo Donuts - The "other" location

It was funny seeing this as we walked through the door...

Homer Simpson should be annointed the "Patron Saint of Donuts"...

This here was the "other location" of a very popular donut shop. Let's go inside, shall we?

Bright Pepto-Pink is what I'd call this paint job. As you can see, TONS of parking! Not like downtown.

For the antisocial folks like myself, I was pleased that there were no crowds either. I mean, look, just a handful of folks in line...

I loved this awesome revolving case of donutty delights. Okay, so this brings me to my story, which I'll rehash from my Day 6 Highlights Post.

While standing in line to place our order, I overheard  a man behind me (who I later figured to be "mentally challenged") excited saying, "Oooh, look at the one shaped like a HATCHET!"! I had to seriously bite my tongue and not correct him. After I saw that he had Downs, I figured, okay, he gets a pass from my inner snark.

So, ummmm, can you guess which ONE that could be childrens?  Fans of Voodoo Donuts will recognize that "hatchet" shape as their infamous "Cock and Balls" cream-filled donuts. From the looks of it, that one wasn't that big. You can even have them pipe a special message on the...."long part", heh heh.

Uh yeahhhhh.....

Moving right along. As pink as it was outside, it was also an explosion of pink inside, just like my blog's background color.  Lots of kitschy memorabilia on the walls, plus PINBALL MACHINES!

We just got a half dozen...

Carb and Sugar Fest:

TC with the "Captain my Captain" donut - a raised yeast donut with vanilla frosting topped with Captain Crunch!

Bert could now enjoy the Bacon Maple Bar. Last time we went, it was Lent and he had sworn off all meat. I think I would like this better if the bacon was crumbled up and embedded into the maple frosting. More bacon in every bite, I say.

This was the Grape Ape - a raised yeast donut with lavender sprinkles and what they call "Grape Dust". It didn't really taste that "grapey" to me though.

This was the Mango Tango (which we also got last time). This was a filled donut and we really liked this one. I have to say that we took a few bites of each just to sample. We wanted to save our appetites for lunch.

Here was a normal donut, what they call the Chocolate Bar. Nice and simple. This was my favorite.

I think with all the imaginative names and funky toppings, it's just all show. The donuts are not that spectacular in my opinion, but then, I'm no donut gourmand. These aren't sucky but they're not THE best either. They do win hands down with funny names (Diablo Rex, Triple Chocolate Penetration, Butterfingering,  and Old Dirty Bastard).

Of course, we had to get the Voodoo Doll donut, complete with a pretzel stick  to stab it's raspberry jam filled heart. Bert and TC had fun playing the Pirates of the Caribbean pinball game. You can also see a Rogue Brewery neon sign. We like their beers (it's local to Newport, OR).

Did you know you can get married in Voodoo Donuts? Complete under the watchful eye of the glowingly rendered black velvet painting of the gambler himself, Kenny Rogers.

This was a sign that commemorated recent deaths, such a Soul Train host, Don Cornelius (who passed away in early February of this year) and former "Hedgehog" Robert "Epstein" Heyges.

Apart from the non-intentionally funny comment from the hapless dude in line, we had a pretty relaxing time while here. There's lots of seating and fun people watching, even on a cold rainy day such as this.

Our previous visit was at the first location downtown. See it here in all it's glory during our visit to the Saturday Market and the now defunct Velveteria (from our 2009 trip).

Yes, it was still raining when we left. Surprised?

It was time to head out to the SE so we could knock down some pins...
