Mum's Restaurant and Bakery

Just down the street from Foodland was a bakery that is a favorite with locals...

I was looking for one of Canada's iconic desserts...

The bakery is also a restaurant.

Their prices...we went with the six baked items for $8.75.

Lots of various bars plus baklava...

Too bad they were covered in plastic. These looked super sweet and cavity inducing. I say that in a good way.

There were also a few cake slices and yes, they had what I was looking for!

Butter tarts! C also bought a couple of slices of carrot cake (one her husband's favorites), three of the butter tarts, and one "Hello Dolly" bar (also known as a7-layer bar; my version looks way different than this one).

See that crust? Underneath that thin crackle of sugar was a molten volcano of oozing buttery caramel goodness. As you can see by the size, these are dinky little tarts either. They also make versions with raisins or with pecans. This place just had the plain ones, which was fine by us.

The buttery and flaky crust was also excellent. Just look at that oozing filling!

We were hooked!  And wow, there were even home made pies.

No room for pies right now. We finished off one of the tarts and had a few bites of the Hello Dolly bar, which was a bit too "firm", okay, ROCK HARD, for my tastes. I still dream about those butter tarts. I am just way too lazy to make them, but one of these days, I will drag my lazy ass to the kitchen and force myself to make those tarts!
