Rolls and balls...

After watching "Cosmopolis", we headed back down to Aliso Viejo where TC hung out with her cousins (Bert's oldest bro's kids).

I thought this was really nice to see:

Kyla Ross is an Olympic gold medalist in the women's gymnastics team, aka "The Fierce Five". Here's a recent write up from the local paper about her return to town from the Olympics

She's a high school student at nearby Aliso Niguel High School. I also think it's cool that she's part Filipino! Her father is of Japanese and African American heritage while her mom is Filipino and Puerto Rican! What a beautiful mix! Anyhow, it was so nice to see community support.

This sign was near the Aliso Viejo Town Center where we would take the kids out to dinner...

We asked our nephew to choose and this is what he wanted, Japanese food at Kanpai Sushi.

The Aliso Viejo Town Center is a sprawling business complex that includes various businesses, eateries and a movie theater. Not quite a mall though, but very diverse in their offerings. I was glad he didn't pick Chile's or Daphne's.

The kids were hungry since they swam that afternoon. For lunch, they had homemade fish tacos courtesy of my brother in law.

I liked the sushi chef's hair. Kind of like a mohawk but shorter.

Their special rolls:

We're so boring. We just got rolls.

The kids shared the Dynamite Roll (basically a Cali roll with spicy mayo on top) and the Crunchy Roll...

Bert had the Caterpillar Roll (he had a craving for something with eel):

This was my Salmon Skin roll, which looked rather "naked". I guess I'm used to it having those frou frou bonito shavings on top.

Rolls are rolls, eh. At least they were rolled up tightly no like that sloppy Tani's in Portland or Juan Chou's wierdly shaped rolls that fell apart. The kids enjoyed their rolls but couldn't quite finish so we had a few ourselves, but there still ended up being leftovers. The place did good business. It was pretty small inside. Very diverse crowd too. Lots of families.

For dessert, we contemplated on going to Irvine to go to Mochilato but didn't want to deal with driving again, so instead we just went to Trader Joe's (in the same complex) for these:

Mochi Balls filled with ice cream. These were the flavors that the kids chose - mango and chocolate. They were $3.49 a box. The other flavors were strawberry and green tea.

Not quite as good as the ice cream filled mochi bon bons at Mochilato. Wait, they fill theirs with gelato. Oops, either way, it's all good.

I love how soft the mochi feels. Like a baby's butt or a Sphinx cat (think Dr. Evil's cat). Mochi + ice cream = yum!

It was a fun little road trip during a very beautiful and sunny weekend.

Yay, it's almost Friday!
