Especially if the occasion is a birthday!
In this case, it was my sister's 40th! That's right, 40 is the new 30! We all met up at my parents' for a small birthday dinner. Like our other gatherings, it was informal. My sis didn't want to make it a huge deal or anything. She's pretty low-key...The dish in the middle with green beans had shrimp and pork (not sure what it's called in English)...

This was fried crab that my parents' picked up at a local Chinese place. It wasn't very good. The meat was too mushy and it was greasy.

This was some sort of seafood side dish with broth which included mussels, squid rings, KRAB, and tiny skrimps.

Speaking of Skrimps, it was also represented in its fried state. Yeah, this is a lot of fried food I know...You only live once, right? The kids love this fried shrimp!

My dad also fried these excellent fish fillets (I forgot what type it was, maybe halibut). It was so light and I loved the crisp edges. He made his own tartar sauce (heavy on the onions) as well. Look at the border on that melamine plate. So lovely. I think that's from the 70's. My mom has a lot of "vintage" Pyrex and Corningware. I think some of her pieces are older than my sister! Ha ha!

My sis also brought in a huge bag full of calamansi fruit. One of her co-workers has a tree and was giving away loads of it. I took more than half and intend to squeeze the juice for future recipes or "calamansi-ade"! Our poor tree 's fruits are pretty much gonel. They weren't as nice and unblemished as these beauties. Our fruits were kind of small and wimpy looking!

I can't believe my sis is 40 now! My bro turned 40 last year. We told her, laughingly, "Welcome to the Club"! She's a great sis with two awesome sons. We're closer now than when we were growing up. Especially when we used to share a bedroom when we were younger - we'd be fighting all the time. After we all left the house, got married, etc...our relationships with each other (bro included) became stronger. At least we share the same genes since we both don't look our age! Age is just a number right? If I had to pick a decade that I really enjoyed, it would probably be my 30's, but being 40-something isn't so bad either!
