That cool refreshing drink...

We were at my friend's daughter's party recently (she turned one) and I got a kick out of the drinks selection. Besides Capri Suns for the kids, beers, waters, and sodas for everyone else, there was also a liquid refreshment table (heh heh, my term).

The selection was eclectic. Red wine sangria (far left), two types of Philippine drinks (to be discussed in the next few photos), iced tea, and fruit punch.

See the little tapioca balls in the container in the back? That was the Gulaman at Sago drink (agar agar/gelatin and tapioca). The one in the front was another type of Philippine drink that included various canned items...

The liquid itself was brown sugar water. Very very sweet. Like rot your teeth til they fall out and you look like a toofless person sweet.  The balls are tapioca balls. You can buy bags of them at the Asian stores then I believe you have to boil them to make them soft.

Sago at Gulaman
(Recipe from PinoyRecipe.net)

Ingredients:
3 cups of sugar
3 cups of water
boiled sago
cooked gulaman (cubed)
crushed ice

Sago at Gulaman Cooking Instructions :
•Caramelized sugar in a saucepan. When melted, pour in the water.
•Continue cooking until the sugar is completely dissolved. Cool completely.
•Add the syrup to the sago to sweeten it.
•In a glass, put some sago and gulaman. Add enough sugar to sweeten. Fill with ice or add ice-cold water

Easy enough right? I'm sure my auntie (who made these drinks) boiled more than three cups of sugar and three cups of water!

Now the drink below was also quite popular. I don't know the name of this in Tagalog (it might be Buko at Lychee), but it's basically a bunch of canned items, which include, coconut juice, young fresh coconut meat, lychees, rambutans (a fruit similar to a lychee), palm nuts, coconut gel cubes, and agar agar (cubed almond gelatin). My auntie insisted that there was no real recipe for this drink and that she just dumped a bunch of canned stuff (including the juice) into the container.

TC and I liked the second drink a lot better. I liked both actually, but preferred eating the coconut meat and fruits rather than the tapioca balls (aka boba). I don't like the texture of the boba - they remind me of giant boogers. Well? They do!!!

The title is a reference from Eddie Murphy imitating Elvis from his "Delirious" album. See video below. The reference is at :22)

If I wanted to be completely "accurate", this would have been a "lemonade" post! But I digress...
