WC had already been here three times. Well, this was our first!

Salju means "snow" in Indonesian and they serve flavored shaved ice with toppings...Still there?
Their menu is pretty simple:

The owner and his two workers were very friendly...

Since we had ice cream not too long ago, we shared just one shaved ice concoction here. TC chose the mango flavored ice (I would have wanted to try the green tea or chocolate). The toppings were red beans (my choice), jackfruit (TC's choice) and since we coulnd't decide on a third choice, Daniel (the owner) suggested mochi balls. We all agreed on that!

The frozen ice with milk has a very unique texture. It looks like snow, but flavored snow! Well, you can't see it here underneath all those toppings and condensed milk.

I wish they had places like this in San Diego. I think the closest place that makes this style of shaved ice is in Irvine. Kinda too far for us to drive just for that though. One side note - I wore a pair of earrings in honor of Harry Potter. This dangling pair of earrings paid homage to the wizard game of Quidditch. There was a golden snitch, two bludgers and one quaffle which all dangle under a goal hoop. It was a discreet way to display my Harry Potter geekness rather than wearing the whole Slytherin outfit (plus it was too warm to dress up in full regalia!)

Here's a closeup of those earrings. I wonder if this seller sold it to Whimsic Alley? They look exactly the same.

(image from CCPPolly's etsy shop, but I bought my pair from Whimsic Alley in L.A.)
Here's a close up of that snow with a little drizzle of condensed milk (he gave us a squeeze bottle on the side)...

The texture is so amazing and melt in your mouth awesome!

Who else ate at Salju Dessert?
Wandering Chopsticks was there soon after they opened several weeks ago
plus the folks from Food Coma enjoyed a visit here!
Reviews from Yelp (only 5 so far; it was 2 last week)
There is no official website for Salju Dessert.
The owner, Daniel was supernice. He even took the time to sit and chat with us. He was interested in knowing how we heard of this place and wanted to know what we thought of the dessert. He was a very friendly guy and seemed very happy to meet his customers. I hope his business does well.

Those are awesome earrings. The flavored ice sounds so good too but I find L.A. too hot to travel during the summer months with traffic and the sun blaring in. Maybe when the weather lets up I'll make a trip up there again.
hi darlene - i wished i bought it from the etsy seller instead of the store (it was cheaper!). although i haven't tried this place yet, The Balcony (in Irvine in the Jamboree and Alton Parkway shopping center) - i hear it's pretty good. it's way diff't than the shave ice at donut star. this is more like fluffy and milky snow.
Oh it's like the Taiwanese snow/snowflake shaved ice! So many places are popping up in LA with this now. The Balcony is decent, but I prefer the ones in SGV.
hi kirbie - yes, it's like the taiwanese snow ice! i've had the one at kang kang food court with wc. have you heard of this place called fluff ice? i have yet to try the balcony - i hope to go there soon, so i can go to 85c again! ha ha.
Yes I just read about fluff ice on someone's blog, I can't remember whose. Haven't tried it yet though. Kang kang is the old school style Taiwanese shave ice. (Unless they have snow now too?) And then a few years ago Taiwan introduced snow ice, which I adore. I hope it will eventually come to SD. I'm kind of surprised Tea Station hasn't done it yet because they usually bring in a lot of the traditions from Taiwan.
hi kirbie - the fluff ice was from justjenn's blog. taiwanese have good snacks and breads!!!!
Oh you are right! I kept thinking it was from Wandering Chopsticks blog but then I looked back and didn't see anything. And then I checked my other usual LA bloggers, and couldn't find anything. I didn't think of Justjenn since hers usually are recipes. Adding feeds to my rss feed reader is bad. I end up with hundreds of feeds im subscribed to and then I can't remember where I read something unless I bookmark it.
hi kirbie - re: taiwanese style shave ice - i had a really bad one at tea garden. if only i had read your post before i went on saturday, we would have been spared from that crappy dessert! ugh! i'll be posting on that soon!
