Tuk Tuk One Thai Food

I remember seeing the cool font of Tradewinds Liquor House while en route to a different destination...

This particular day, I was accompanied by my friend CAB. Having just enjoyed drinks at the new Ultreya Coffee...

we made our way down to Oak Park to try out Tuk Tuk One Thai Food. She'd never been and I saw it on googlemaps and thought we could check it out.  It's on the corner. I parked across the street at a mostly empty lot, although I could have probably parallel parked it on the street.

Tuk Tuk One Thai Food has been here for a few years. Mary did take out here back in 2015 (see her post linked at the end) and I'd been meaning to come here. Thank goodness for being on break when I can actually enjoy going out to lunch instead of eating a sad sack lunch at my desk locked up in my office.

There was one guy working the floor that day plus a cook in the back. No one came in to eat while we were there although several people walked in to maybe buy a few items from a cold case.  The decor on the walls ranged from Thai money notes, tourist t-shirts, and Thai movie posters. I loved it all!

Forget everything else and the lunch specials (where are pretty ho hum)...we went straight to the Chef Special page.  The first three were ordered along with papaya salad (spice level 3 on a scale of 1-10).

Here it all is (foil wrapped object is our sticky rice, ordered separately):

Papaya salad - The spice level of three seemed a lot hotter. We only ordered this to have some sort of vegetable dish, ha ha. The salad was also Thai style because I'm not a fan of the funkier fish sauce used in Lao style Papaya salad.

Thai housemade  sausage served with fried peanuts and slivered ginger. I was glad they used real ginger here. Soi on 30th in North Park didn't even offer it until I asked.  EaThai in Rolando  uses Japanese pickled ginger...why, who knows, but real is much better!

The fermented pork was mixed with herbs and rice. There was a slight chew to the "skin" casing. The ends were kind of burnt and still had the strings on them which I avoided. That being said, the sausages were quite flavorful.

The other special we ordered the beef jerky. It's funny, reading the menu, the description says "deep fried marinated pork or beef".  So, pork or beef?  This was beef. The spicy lime sauce was so good and even though it was so hot, we wanted to keep dipping our pieces in there. I  even brought it home, ha ha.  The marinated dried meat was not totally tough but had some nice thickness to it.

The third special was crispy pork (it was the belly) with broccoli and carrots.  Who cares about the vegetables, give us the meat.  The pieces that weren't in the sauce were attacked first.  Both CAB and I enjoyed this dish a lot. We had three meat dishes,  heh heh.  This dish was also served with a bowl of regular white rice which wasn't really eaten but taken home later.

We liked everything we had here. I'd go back again with Bert just so he could try that sausage (sorry, no leftovers).

Who else tried Tuk Tuk One Thai?
