Wayfarer Bread & Pastry

Yesterday we made the rare trip up to La Jolla...

more specifically the Bird Rock area...

There was a new bakery in town and the promise of an interesting croissant flavor combination...

More info on the chef/owner linked at the end but just know that her pastries are top quality. They are pricy but worth it.  The decor and vibe is minimalistic, rustic and chill. The folks there were super nice and friendly.

There was seating both inside and outside. In fact, the lighting outside was better since it was overcast that day, I prefer it much more than super sunny.

One of everything please.

Aaand here goes...mushroom tart, cream bun with nectarine jam, chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, plain croissant, and the one croissant I was curious to try, strawberry pistachio.

Coffee was from Iron Smith Roasters in Encinitas.

Cortado for me, hot chocolate for TC and a traditional macchiato for Bert.

All of the drinks were made well. TC's hot chocolate was fancy. None of that powdered stuff (which she said she actually likes better, ha ha) but more of, fancy chocolate shavings melted slowly in hot milk. This was quite rich, thick, and decadent.  The glazed ceramic cups and sauces were also a nice touch.

My breakfast - the Mushroom tart and the Ham and Cheese (Bert had a few bites while waiting for his breakfast sandwich). Both of these savory pastries were so delicious. They reminded me of the pastries we had at Twenty40 in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles.

Shared - the strawberry pistachio croissant. The strawberry filling also had ground pistachios within, which I really liked. So it wasn't just pistachios on top either. This was one of the most beautiful croissants I've had the pleasure to eat.

Breakfast sandwiches served with house made pickled carrots.

Breakfast sandwiches for Bert and TC - Egg/ham for Bert and for TC, egg/avocado and some sort of greens that she didn't like (it wasn't arugula either; it was some odd shaped leaf). The English muffins were of course house made and pretty damn good. I had a bite of Bert's sandwich and wow, I wished it were my breakfast instead. The ham was also good quality.

Just look at these...

Give them all to me.

Loaf of rye bread with seeds for Cathy and her mister (they also were gifted the plain croissant). She said this had a LOT of seeds. The bread was dense too. They enjoyed both of the breads. The rye was enjoyed later that day, sliced thinly and spread with butter.

TC's chocolate croissant - excellent flaky layers.

Cream bun with nectarine jam - The jam was kind of sparse. Not sure why it was called a cream bun. This was more bready than flaky too.
