City Sports Bar & Grill, Vacaville

In this large complex,

is a recreational area/sports bar...

Our good friend from junior high is the executive chef here. He's always had an open invite to former classmates (especially class of '87) to visit and after all of these years, we finally took him up on his offer.

The place was kind of dead considering it was the lunch hour.  According to our friend, the place gets packed at night especially when sports games are on. In any case, we were glad it was nice and quiet inside.

He told us that he would make some  off the menu items for our lunch. We had no idea what would come out, but I'll tell you that everything that came our way was delicious.

He sent several appetizers. The first was the ahi poke with won ton chips and nori sheets.  TC was really happy to see this. There wa a lot of creamy avocado as well which was nice.

followed by artichoke heart poppers, since the vegetable was in season the time of our visit.

He also sent mushroom poppers our way...

and one more fried item, which was the tempura asparagus (also in season).  Of the appetizers, I really enjoyed the asparagus. The batter was not overly thick and you could taste the freshness of the asparagus.  I liked the artichoke heart poppers as well, that was different than, say, jalapeno.  TC's favorite was the ahi poke.

And when we thought we couldn't have another bite, another dish arrived ...this was shrimp marsala with pasta served with spinach salad and grapes.

The shrimp were so plump and juicy and the sweetness of the sauce and the grapes complemented greens.

Our meal was on the house, which we did not expect.  That was really nice of our friend to to day.  We made sure to leave a very substantial  tip for our server that afternoon.

It was great seeing our friend once more especially knowing that he is really enjoying his career as a chef.  My brother, Thane, as well as Mr. Saliva have visited him over the past few years or so while in they were in the area.  It was our turn to finally be up here in his new territory, ha ha.

As it usually is when we are on the road, stops are built in, sometimes planned or sometimes not. The college town of Davis was on the way to the Capitol, so we thought we would check it out first before heading to our hotel...
