Herb & Eatery

Bert said we could have walked from Santa Fe Depot station...

up to the Little Italy stop...

which really wasn't that far, but I wanted to maximize the use of our trolley card, ha ha. Lazy walker.  The Little Italy stop takes you to this parking garage which has some interesting art along a few walls. The design consisted of flattened but textured rainbow hued ovals.  It reminded me of those gum walls in San Luis Obispo and Seattle (but prettier looking).

From our stop, we walked over to nearby Kettner Blvd to check out a place I'd read about on Kirbie's blog (her post linked at the end).  They opened at 8 am and it was about 8:30 already. I didn't think it would be crowded yet.

Herb & Eatery is a casual restaurant attached to Herb & Wood (open for dinner only), helmed by Chef Brian Malarkey of former "Top Chef" fame.  Bert and I are hardly ever in these parts and we wanted to keep our trolley day concentrated in Little Italy.

As you walk in, there is a huge menu wall on your left (which hides the staircase to the upper floor mezzanine). There is communal seating (which I hate) downstairs and a market where you can buy food gifts, cold drinks, and other merchandise.

We both ordered their croissant sandwiches (maple for me and Thai for him).

When we got upstairs, I realized we had forgotten to order their plain croissants so Bert went back down to get one. Apparently these are quite popular and sell out quickly before the morning's end.  Here it s in all of it's buttery and flaky glory.

We both loved the contrasting crispy exterior with the flaky but soft and buttery interior. I can see why these croissant sell out quickly.

Your food is brought to you.  Below, our breakfast...

Bert's Thai chicken sausage croissant had an over easy egg with arugula, gruyere, cilanto and spicy aioli.  As pretty as it looked, I did not like the combination of cheese with the Thai sausage.  Bert really enjoyed his sandwich. The chicken sausage was tender and of course, he likes that runny egg.

On the other hand, I quite enjoyed my maple sausage croissant sandwich which had arugula, and egg fried over medium (which I liked; Bert doesn't remember asking for it to be prepared this way either)

The flavors of the bitter arugula, creamy gruyere and lemon aioli went really well with the maple sausage.  The croissants were the perfect breakfast delivery system. Croissant overload at its finest and we didn't regret it at all.

We can't forget this side order of brown butter potatoes. Look how brown they are...the mini potatoes are crisped perfectly (some pieces smashed a tiny bit too, which was nice) and soft and creamy inside. I could have had a bowl of just this and called it a day.  I'm glad Bert thought of adding this on.

This was our bougie breakfast treat for today. Now we had to walk off these calories somehow.

Who else went to Herb & Eatery?
Kirbie's post from February 2017 and rave review of their croissants is what prompted us to finally make a visit.
