At the deli counter, we were told the salad would be ready in half an hour..
so to kill time, we walked over to Balboa Bakery, just a few steps away.

As soon as you walk in, you can smell the goodness in this Middle Eastern bakery. There is such a wide selection of cookies and cakes and baklava. They sell their tiny cookies by the pound. I got a small assortment for us to nibble on while we bided our time.

This was about $3.99 (.38 lb/$10.49 lb).

Cookies from left to right, top row - caramel filled chocolate, sugar cookie and orange cookie (the one with the "bumps"); middle row - dill biscuit cookie, chocolate dipped chocolate; bottom row - sesame cookie and chocolate dipped apricot jam filled.

I asked about the black threads were and when the lady said it was dill, I knew we had to try this. The cookie itself was not sweet but on the dry side. The dill gave it an interesting herbal flavor. It's not something I would eat by the handful, but I wanted us to give it a shot.

Of the cookies, I liked the apricot and caramel filled cookies. The orange bumpy cookie had a nice flavor but was surprisingly "hard". D liked the sugar and sesame cookies.
Half an hour elapsed and we made our way back to Balboa International Market. There was still no sign of the Olivier salad. We felt bummed out. One of the ladies working there said they had some they hadn't put out yet (perhaps it was from the night before?). There happened to be enough for both D and I to take home a container each. According to D, this salad is the closest she's ever had to matching her mother's chicken salad.

Olivier salad is a traditional Russian salad made with diced potatoes, peas, carrots, mayonnaise, chicken, and dill. It was amazing and didn't last long at home. Bert, TC and I ate this with crackers. Our first exposure to Olivier salad was at Kafe Sobaka followed by Moscow and Tblisi Russian Bakery.

Everything at this market is so good. We will try this salad next time...with some fresh bread.
Yes, try the salad! You won't regret it. Eaten with bread of crackers, vegetables or even plain, it is delicious.
