as I braved crappy morning traffic to get over to North Park...

(photo from my "Return to Lil B's" post, March 2013)
where the once awesome rotating Lil B's sign...
no longer rotated and was a shadow of its former self. Despite the crappy condition of the sign (which occurred about a year and a half ago during a freak storm, according to our waitress and STILL not fixed), the restaurant is still around. We were one of the first customers that morning...

I had of these coupons waiting to be used...

You will notice that there is none of that "with purchase of two beverages" crap this time!

TC and I were thinking along the same lines. She chose the Chicken with Waffle ($11.29) while I got the Chicken Fried Steak ($11.69). Yes, I'm conducting more...research. Yeahhhh...

My latest obsession, Chicken Fried steak (with a side of hash browns) and TC's Chicken and Waffles:

The pieces were breast, wings, wing plus attached thigh. Her waffle was so light and fluffy and came with whipped butter. The breading was nice, thick and crunchy, the way it should be. It was the same on my chicken fried steak. This was probably a close second to the version from Manna Restaurant (not the Korean AYCE place).

The hash browns came out shortly after our plates were set down on the table. Our server explained that the kitchen was making sure they were nice and crisp, and they were! You'll notice that the hash browns are cut thinner and flatter. The portion pales in comparison to the one from Perry's Cafe the other day. I didn't really have too much of the biscuit.

Of the different versions of Chicken Fried steak I've had over this past year (the most ever in my whole life and I'm only saying that because I didn't grow up eating this type of food), this had the best coating. It was nice, thick and crisp. The gravy I wasn't so crazy about. It was okay but I really enjoyed the gravy from Perry's Cafe because wasn't so thick and floury.

The green onions on top need to go too. Yes, it adds color but is unnecessary on top of chicken fried steak.
Update - I was looking at my old Brian's Eatery post (Brian's Eatery in Hillcrest was the predecessor to lil 'b's) and lo and behold, this plate looked familiar:

(photo from my "Brian's Eatery" post, November 2011)
Apparently, I ordered this same dish years ago but with broccoli. Green onions on top of the gravy and also gravy on top of the mashed potatoes, which I'm glad they didn't do the same treatment to my biscuit lil b's. I wasn't a fan of the white gravy back then and even just recently, would have preferred a more 'flavorful' gravy.
Previous visit to Lil B's:
December 2013 where we ate the day after Christmas...(this post also links my first visit with Cathy)
Just one block west was our next destination, a place we saw a few days prior while on the way to meet Cathy for breakfast...

Chicken fried steak research is definitely a worthy exploration :) The steak looks tasty, too! Huh, never seen anyone put green onions of top of CFS either. It is pretty but it does seem unnecessary. Man that waffle looks really good and sounds heavenly! I much prefer the belgian style crispy waffles to the "soft" limp ones I've had at some places. Soft waffles are weird.
Green onions are so unnecessary. IIA having fun trying the different versions of CFS.
Limp waffles suck.I don't like cinnamony ones either.
The chicken fried steak at Shirley's kitchen is pretty good as well as Tobey's19th hole restaurant at Balboa park.
Thanks for the recommendation and for taking the time to comment Christina C. :)
I will have to try Shirleys for their CFS. As for Tobey's, I went there earlier this year:

My husband had the CFS and it was pretty good from what I can recall.
