Fish Mart

Lunch today was at a place I'd seen before but never paid much attention to.

My hairstylist recommended it as well as my sister...

But first, some changes. Two years ago, El Mango Manila, a fruiteria,  was next door to Fish Mart.

(photo from my "El Mango de Manila post" from November 2013)

TC was kind of bummed because she wanted to get Tostilocos from this place.

It's gone now. In it's place is Tacos el Guero, a taco shop, duh.  Which is fine with me because I have a coupon for it which I will save for a later visit

Another change was that Neighbors Supermarket was now...

Pancho Villa mercado!

It's a pretty small one. The covered wings at the entrance have fresh produce such as red and green tunas (cactus fruits), nopales, watermelon, lime papaya, oranges, and so on.

Well, at least this place was still here, Fish Mart.

Sorry no menu photos. Mine came out with a horrid glare so I'll spare you the craptastic shots.

TC's refreshing horchata:

The consomme was really good; not too salty and full of fresh chopped onion.

We got there during the lunch rush. There were many Border Patrol agents on lunch break. There was also an older dude who looked like a younger and skinnier Ernest Hemingway/George R.R. Martin. Photo below taken after the lunch rush, hence the empty seats. It's pretty roomy in here. Service was good as well.

Nearby was a shelf with either supplies (tostadas and a variety of hot sauces) or stuff people can buy. Not sure.

TC's combo plate of two fish tacos with rice and beans. I thought the rice portion was skimpy. It seems like TJOB serves more. TC thought the fish tacos were okay but not great.

My three tacos (the one in the middle had a corn tortilla; the other two were double flour which was nicely grilled):

Camaron a la plancha (grilled shrimp)

Underneath all the chopped lettuce, tomatoes and white sauce was the grilled shrimp:

This was a bit on the bland side. The taco seemed to be mostly filler.

Pescado:

Unfortunately their breading was too thick and gummy. Not so good. I ended up just eating the meat and leaving the breading and the tortillas.

Pulpo (octopus; he asked if I wanted it prepared with garlic and I said yesO:.

Cheese was layered onto the tortillas which gave it a good flavor. The octopus pieces were tender and plentiful. Of the three tacos, this was my favorite. My least was the fish.

All of the tortillas had a nice light toastiness to them. I ended up eating mine deconstructed.

Here is a commercial (circa 2013):

(Update) Who else went to Fish Mart?
Kirk went here back in 2011 and wasn't too impressed.

Fish Mart
2036 Dairy Mart Road, Suite 126
San Ysidro, CA 92173
(619)662-0270

There is no website but here are the reviews from yelp and foursquare

Although I wasn't impressed with the fish taco here, the octopus was pretty good. I  would definitely come back for some grilled fish entrees and the Margarita de Mango Chamoy.

Ever since I knew some tacos were made with a layer of melted cheese, life has changed. Seeking those out has been a priority...gobernador was the gateway. Garlic is, of course, the perfect condiment with any grilled fish flavor...now octopus is something to seek. Great post.

Cheese makes everything taste better I say. They offer gobernador here too. I will have to try it for a future visit. Their grilled fish plates looked good as did the variety of preparations with accompanying sauces (like culichis).

I just added your post/link. Yeah, the fish taco here aren't that great. Perhaps their grilled fish entrees are much better.
