where they were gearing up for their upcoming Oktoberfest...

It was still quite early in the morning .Early enough to score parking near our next destination, Azucar...
because dessert was in order here man, specifically the Turron de Havana (first seen in Darlene's compilation post, linked at the end). I guess I've never noticed this before in my previous visits, but now that I know of its existence, try keeping me away from it. Dude, seriously.

The turron, which Cathy and I shared, also served as a birthday dessert of sorts (Cathy and her mister celebrated their respective birthdays recently; her posts are definitely forthcoming). Cathy also bought some pastries for herself and the mister to enjoy for later). TC chose the mango cheesecake (which is a constant fixture; in looking at my old Azucar posts, it still looked exactly the same) which had a lovely fluffy and light texture within. My coffee...a double shot of Cubano coffee. I loved how supersweet it already was!

Cheese and guava pastries. There was another pastry that combined both but Cathy chose the pastries with separate flavors.

Back to the star of the show...

This is a chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel lover's dream come true. The bottom layer consists of crushed wafer cookies topped by the salted caramel layer, chocolate mousse and topped with dark chocolate ganache with a tiny bit of brushed gold leaf. A gilded blackberry serves as a cute and edible accent.

A few bites were enough to tide us over. It's so decadent and rich.
The crowds hadn't yet descended on OB just yet...

It was still relatively uncrowded in this stretch of Newport Ave. We still had other things to do today but it was still a good feeling to have shared a good meal (and dessert) with TC and Cathy.
Who else went to Azucar?
Cathy from mmm-yoso went recently this summer plus Darlene's Zagat SD post, "30 things to eat and drink this fall in San Diego" Sept 14, 2015 (the Turron is number 10 on the list). It also appeared previously on her "Four Fancy Chocolate Bars you're going to love" list from June 23, 2015
Reviews:
tripadvisor, foursquare and that four lettered site
Previous visit to Azucar
"God, that's good!" or a meat pie by any other name July 2015
Sadly, even though I had a cooler, the turron melted just like the Wicked Witch of the West and resembled a nutty brown mess. No matter! Bert and I still ate the melted leftovers! TC's mango cheesecake didn't really melt and still tasted just a good the next day!

My piece of Turron seemed intact directly from your cooler, but in the 20 minutes or so just driving home, it melted into that same blob. I refrigerated it and The Mister ate it that evening, able to taste all the flavors, but I suppose not the textures we were able to enjoy. This patisserie is so much nicer in freshness and uniqueness than others.
Yeah, the Turron succumbed from the heat and degenerated into a sticky mess. Azucar is a great addition to all of the bakeries in San Diego. I think it's one of the best ones in SD.
Ooo, I'd like to try that turron! It sounds heavenly and right up my alley. And cuban coffee, too! Oh man I forgot this was a Cuban place - I haven't had cuban coffee since I went to Florida - I think it's awesome.
Darlene told me she knows how make that Turron! That is such a decadent dessert and I love it. I like the Cuban coffee here. The one at Holsem is pretty good as well. Embargo Sandwiches also offers Cuban coffee.
